Engine builders- which Felpro gaskets for the intake?

I have a set of 1205 felpro Intake gaskets, and a set of 90314-1 felpro intake gaskets. IM not sure which ones to use. The 1205s are suggested on my paper work by Trickflow. IM using there heads, they are aluminum.

The 90314-1 is in a felpro replacement set i bought recently. IT looks like a better gasket then the 1205s,IM wondering if it would hold up better for a street application over the 1205s. IM not sure if it will work on aluminum heads though. I know some race gaskets you shouldnt use a street car because over time they break down and leak. The 90314-1s feel like they have a steel core. And the 1205s dont, would they indent the aluminum? The intake is aluminum from the factory, so it seems like it would be okay to use on my aluminum heads also.

From what I remember without looking, the 1205 has a larger opening than the stock gasket. I guess it would depend more on your intake as to which one you might want to use. As for using the steel core gasket, it wont hurt anything with your heads or intake.

Good point.. I was just comparing the two and the 1205 does have a larger opening. IM using an Accel Base,I will have to see which set matches the intake/heads better.

Well..The 1205 matches the base and heads good. The stock replacement one is too small the gasket over hangs the port. On the heads its pretty bad at the bottum of the port. I guess i will use the 1205 then.

The stock replacement one just seemed like a stronger piece.

Thanks!

Mike,
The 1205 is the right one - I've been running it with TFS heads and aluminum intake for 3 years and no probs. If you gasket-match both the heads and intake to the gasket, you'll pick up another 200-400 RPM and 10-15 HP. It's worth the extra few hour at the bench with your Dremel.

Good luck.

BOR

Hey BOR...Thanks! I feel much better knowing you have used the 1205s for so long with no problems. This is my first set of aluminum heads and I dont want to screw them up.

I would like to gasket match everything,But IM under a little pressure. IM about to be come a father for the first time in about 3 months. Its a Boy! I hope to make him a car nut like me! And all my free time seems to be spent trying to get the house ready for him. I have to fit installing this engine in somewhere before then.

I have Edelbrock aluminum heads and assembled my engine using 1256's. After a few months, I saw some coolant leakage. It got progressively worse. Fortunately, the leakage didn't get into the engine. I pulled the intake and reassembled, again using 1256's but made sure to use Ultra Blue around the water passages (applied to heads, both sides of gaskets, and to intake). I couldn't remember if I did that originally and couldn't tell for sure upon disassembly (I used black silicone the first time). So far (only a couple of weeks) everything is dry. I have my fingers crossed.

I personally don't like the Permatorque Blue gaskets for aluminum parts - especially when both the heads and intakes are aluminum. The softer type of gasket makes more sense to me in this case. Even Fel-Pro says they are for just that application. I just hope my re-do holds up. If not, I will have to try something else.

What about other manufacturers: ROL, Victor, etc.? Don't they make quality stuff, too? Is Fel-Pro always the best, or are too many people buying due to the name recognition?

Fel-pro makes a good gasket, and their prices are reasonable. Theres lots of gasket manufacturers out there, some of which make specialty stuff and some who dont but Fel-pro isnt the only or best gasket out there, but its definitely not a bad choice.

Did you guys use blue silicone on the 1205s? They do have a blue ring around the intake and water ports. I would hate for them to leak around the water ports like PJs did. Ive always used silicone around the water ports on my castiron heads. Should I do the same with the 1205s and aluminum heads?

my store carries ROL gaskets and i personally dont like them and wont use them.. they just look too cheap and many of them are 2 pieces that are seamed together...just dont like them. always used felpro cause they are reasonablly priced and easy to get

The last 400 I built,I used a set of the ROL gaskets. This time I bought all Felpro stuff. And the quality of the Felpro gaskets is better IMO. Ive never had good luck with the cork type gaskets they always leaked some.

That brown "aircraft" sealer works exellent as long as you never have to remove it!

200-400 more RPM and 15+ ponies from a port match? Them ports must be off by a mile!
