new engine won't start

We built a new 350 for my buddy's 86 iroc it is a tpi set up with vortec heads. It is timed right, we have spark and fuel, but no start. I checked it with a scanner, it has no codes, but also the TPS shows no voltage, also the O2 shows no volts. I have checked ground straps, changed chips, and different things. What am I missing? It turns over and if I move the dist. it will spit back but no start. Any suggestions?

Sounds like timing.

How did you time it?

Check the TPS with a voltmeter. I've seen scanning s/w that won't read right for one sensor, but eng runs fine.

With KOEO (key on engine off) there should be voltage at the TPS...a 5 volt refference that will suply power to the sennsor. The refference signal for that and other sensors comes from the computer. You must check at the sensor itself to see if the refference is there.

I degreed the cam when I installed it, then put the mark on the balancer on 0 and the dist. lined with #1, and turned randomly while tring to start.

i am not sure that you can with chevy, but with some other brands it is possible to have the distributor out 180 degrees, i have seen it on a dodge before and it acted very much like you discribed

If you put the rotor facing #1 with the balancer at "0"; you have a 50/50 chance it's in right.

If you put the rotor facing #1 with the dots on the crank/cam gears close to each other, it's definately 180 degs out.

Turn the dist 180 degs and try again.

if you installed the crank and cam gears dot to dot and lined the rotor up on #1 you have it 180 out.

exactly, find TDC of the compression stroke for the #1 piston, then install your distributer with the rotor facing the #1 cylinder.

thats should get your timing close enough to get the engine fired up.

its really easy to stab the distributer 180 out, i've done it before.
