A very frightening CLICKING!!

My '87 T/A is awesome. I have noticed that under the hood there is a CLICKING noise. Obviously it only does it when the car is on. It sounds like it's coming from the alternator but I can't be sure, any suggestions? Thanks.

Might be a lifter or an exhaust leak. If it's a lifter you'll want to make sure they are adjusted right(by tightening the loose ones). Just take it easy on the engine until you find out. You might want to put new lock nuts on them too to keep it from happening again.

It might be in the pulley system. You said that it sounds like the altenator. Take off the belt and spin the pulley. If it clicks or makes a grinding noise its probably bad. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Take the belt off and start the engine. That will tell you if it's the alternator. If the noise is still there try the stick-o-wood stethascope trick and see if you can located the general area. Lifter? Exhaust leak? Try playing with the lifter adjustment while the engine is running, if the click changes pitch or tone then then tighten painfully slowly untill noise goes away. Still clicking? Exhaust leak?

Just don't let the engine run very long without the belt , No belt = No water pump

If its carbed the clicking is normal and is the Mixture Control Selonoid doing its job.

Hard to determine. Guys are on track with the drive belt just for troubleshooting purposes. If it's TPI, those fuel injectors will click like no tomorrow - that would be normal.

My 305 IS a TPI motor, so it's normal?

could be... but does it do it all the time or while warming up, or while revving or just in general. my TBI ticks like no tomorrow when i start it up....then the exhaust leak drowns it out....then my stereo drowns that out.
later
