Hey 'Icebird', I have a pretty lumpy cam (Comp XE284), and I run it about 8-9 in gear, and about 1K out of gear.
I have my initial timing (about 16°), so it behaves nicely.
Might check your timing a little.

Oh yea, the 284 has a 240/244 duration. Hydraulic-Flat.

I'm running a 294 solid lifter cam... ( Duration 248/248 lift .525 /.525) and I've got it idleing at around 650-700 in park or drive (doesn't really change due to loose converter) Base timing is at 19°.
