Aftermarket ignition module?
I believe my ignition module is bad, now should I just run down to the local autoparts store and get a no-name, go to the dealer and get an AC Delco or buy aftermarket like Accell? I have heard stock modules are no good for high performance engines. I have a modded 383 TPI.
Thanks

IMO they are all the same. If you live near an autozone get one there. $20 and a lifetime warranty! I stopped in at A&A (I don't know what part stores are around, but A&A is drag race Joe Amatos store {Key Parts}) and they wanted $80 for a Standard replacement!!! What are they smokin'!!
I got the accell one and sent it back. Improvements are more in the coil.

dont buy no names
the best is acdelco or accel
either way there will be little improvement in performance from just a module change.
racing ignitions eliminate this module because generally it sucks for high rpms

Get one from Performance Distributors. Also get their coil.
A speed shop I know of that carries both products A-B'd a DUI against MSD on a car on their chassis dyno; the Perf Dist DUI made 7 more RWHP than the best that MSD could do.

John,
The Standard Products high-energy modules are a bit pricey, but will sustain primary switching currents and dwells at higher RPMs than the Delphi amplifier. The Accel is probably just as good and is usually a little cheaper.
I don't know why, but I would be a little wary of a generic replacement module in a higher performance application. For most street driving, it would be just fine, but higher RPMs and the resultant short dwell/high currents might be more than a generic unit is designed to handle. I have no data to support this opinion, just a gut feeling that the low-buck replacements aren't up to the task of a more demanding installation. Price is everything in the replacement market, and cutting corners is very likely on low-end components. I could be way off on this.

FYI, Holley's also making a few modules for our distributors. Go to http://www.holley.com , visit the Annihilator link, and go under "parts & accessories" to see:

I've been through a lot of the cheap auto-zone ignition modules. They seem to go bad quicky in high performance applications. I didn't have much better luck with the Accell ones either. I bought an MSD ignition module last year and haven't had any problems since, it seems to be very good quality. It was expensive but better than replacing it every couple of months.
