Specs on Stock V8 305 engine from 1988 camaro's

I am wondering what the general specs on the V8 305's that came in the 1988 camaro's. Just wondering the horsepower and torque. The car is completely stock. Thanks.

Jim,

What fuel system? What transmission? What special packages?

It all matters, since the manuals had a bit more HP and torque, and the TPIs had more power than the TBIs.

its easiest to just answer the question.

305 TBI: 170hp, 255tq
305 TPI automatic: 190hp/285tq

305 TPI 5 speed: 210hp/285tq... varies +/-5hp I believe depending on whether its a Firebird or Camaro.
The 305 TBI was the standard V8 in the Sport Coupe and IROC-Z. The 305 TPI was available only in the IROCs.

I'm sorry. I dont know the specifics. I don't own the car. A friend of mine is looking into buying a 1988 camaro. I personally own a 1983 Trans am. The guy that was selling it to him didnt know that much about the engine i guess, because all he said that it was the smaller 305, so im guessing that it isnt the TPI. It is an automatic. I dont think it has any special packages, and I'm pretty sure it is an RS. Please just give me any info you can, regarding any 1988 camaro. Just give me an estimate, thanks.

The specs should be in the Tech Data section on the home page. If it's an RS, it's most likely the Throttle Body Injection 305 (TBI). 170hp @4000rpm, 255 ft-lbs @2400rpm. It's weird that they don't really list an RS for 88 in the tech data. Is that right?

Yep, just checked, no RS for 88, sport coupe available with V6 or V8.

Re: Specs on Stock V8 305 engine from 1988 camaro's

I'm selling one of these 305 TPI engines from a 1988 Camaro irocZ, with the automatic transmissions still attached, is there any easy way to see if the engine is still good? It was pulled in 99 and stored in the garage since.. any ideas?

I was told to add fluids to it and then use a breaker bar to see if you can turn it.. Is this a safe way to at least see if it's seized? It's only got around 30,000 miles on it so I'm thinking it has to be good..
