stalling issue?
i recently purchased this car at a great deal but i am working out a few bugs. i've read the posts hear, but before i start replacing parts, i'd like to get some opinions.
the car is a 91' firebird, lo3 305 w/tbi (supposedly),5-speed. i haven't had it a month and i haven't tuned it yet, but it runs like you wouldn't believe.
the issue, it will just stall, no warning, no sputtering, no nothing, just stall. no codes what-so-ever. it does it randomly. what i mean is, it may do it today and not again for a week. if it starts it will get more frequent until it sits for a few hours.
at first i thought the gas guage was wrong but thats not the case,it will do it on empty thru a full tank.
thought it could be the fuel pump or relay, but restarts immediatly. i think it would take afew seconds to reset if it was either of those.
now the kicker, i can stop at the gas station, fill it up to make sure there is gas ( eliminating the fuel guage) and drive on. most of the time it will not do it again for a few weeks. otherwise the car runs like a dream.
i talked with a friend and read the posts here. i think the fuel pump could be pulling a vacuum causing it to vapor lock. as i mentioned, i can stop to fill it up and it will run fine, but i've noticed that taking the cap off harder than what think is normal and an excessive amount of hissing.
has any one else had a similar problem? thanks

you won't see vapor lock with an tpi fuel pump. have you checked for fuel pressure when it does this? that would be a good first move. does it have spark when it stalls? if i were to guess i'd say the module is bad.

dankhound, now that i think about it it does do it after cruising, but usually after a few miles. went out this morning and cracked open the gas cap and it was still under pressure. drove it a while today and no stall yet. i'm gonna give it some time and see what happens. had planned on tuning it today but i'm trying to get another tranny in my s-10. i'll keep ya'll up to date on what happens.

YOu gas cap has nothing to do with the egr and shouldnt cause the car to stall. If it does happen to you after youve been cruising at a constant speed you can try disabling your egr by pulling the vacuum line and pluging it or unplugging the solenoid. If the problem goes away you have a sticking egr.

well it wasn't the fuel pump pulling a vacuum. it started the stalling bit again. however i did get around to tuning it monday afternoon and have since put quite a few miles on it without any more problems. situation solved? not sure, but i went ahead and replaced the control module. pretty sure thats what my problem was. no grease on it and it was original. the car even idles normal now. i do need to get my hand on a mounting bracket for the coil. it was just hanging off the back ov the motor. that may have been the problem. anyways, its running good for the time being and i'll keep ya'll posted. thanks for the ideas.

ok, i gave the car a complete tune-up a while back and the stalling went away. that is until now.after about 25 miles or so it would just stall. no warning but it would start right back up.the more we drove the worse it got. be it under a load or at idle at a stop light. on the way back i stopped to fill up the tank and noticed when the pressure was released the air was warm. i'm starting to think the fuel pump may be getting hot. any opinions?
thanks
