Is this a good idea for a shortblock
These are the parts I want to put into my shortblock. I want around 10.1 - 10.5 compression ratio (worked 416 heads). Not sure what cam to use, I want to run it from 2000rpm to 6000. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Stock bore 350 - Already own
forged crank - $300-400 on ebay
Reconditioned LT1 rods - $100-200 on ebay
SpeedPro Forged Pistons - Scoggin Dickey
ARP Hardware - Summit
Stock balancer/flywheel - Already own

What type of valve train are you looking to run? fla tappet? Roller? Judging by your desired RPM range, im assuming your going to use hydraulic, whether it be flat or roller. The Xe274h is a 1800-6000 powerband, and that cam has been a proven performer time and time again.
The build up you are after is nothing new, do a search, the XE274h is a pretty popular cam and has been brought up quite a few times. Crane makes some pretty good cams as well.
And why reconditioned LT1 rods? For the same price (170-200) decent eagle I beam rods can be had.

I was going to use those rods because they are supposed to be good to 500HP (which I'll never see). I heard they can be had very cheap. I can't just buy a rotating assembly kit because I can't afford one right now that has what I want. I want a shortblock that will hold up to a good beating every now and then. I can't afford the machine work for a 383. I have 416 heads going on there, they have .550 lift springs, 1.6 rockers, 3angle valve job, Street Ported, Polished. I know I could have gotten better heads, but I already bought them and payed for the work (they were going on a 305 that is now shot). I have an Edelbrock Torker II intake going on it. Don't know what carb to use. I'm pretty sure the block is not a roller. So I guess I'm going with a flat cam.

FWIW, LT1 rods are a much more nicely finished piece than aftermarket I beams..
I've seen Eagle and Scat and they're both nicer looking than the stock rods, but the PM rods have profiled beams and ends, more eye pleasing IMO... FWIW

Not flaming or anything, but what does that matter? since when do car show judges pull your oil pan to see what rods/crank you have? Trending Topics

for the momment being, all bottom end aside. you have your heads...do you have flow data? if so, pick a cam.
And looking on GM's webiste, i see nothing under the PM rods mentioning that they are "profiled"....Bow Tie rods are profiled....and they look a hell of a lot different. i think if PM rods were truly profiled, why would they have seperate "bowtie" rods....that and i think it would e mentioned.

The left is the profiled Bowtie rods. The right are the PM rods as found in LT1/4 engines.

Admit it Stekman, good parts is pretty parts.
Take a poll and ask what crankshaft guys would rather use as a centerpiece on their dining room table Callies or Scat, Manley rods or Eagle sir... How about a nice set of AFRs to accent your home entertainment center.
We can make a joke out of it if we want, but with quality parts you get a quality finish.
Bling Bling for the inside o your motor!

I cant believe I just posted this

no I don't have the flow data. I'm thinking of going with a summit cam or something inexpensive like that. "Head Builder" said the heads should flow well to 6000 if cam permits. I want a nasty idle yet good power from the lower midrange on up. I have 1.6 rockers , so cam selection must consider this. What do ya'll suggest? Is anybody running a setup like this (I know it's not great, but it's the best I can do with what I have). Thanks.

Ok, it doesnt sound like you plan onmaking any overly massive combo so the bottom end you listed should do fine. Do you plan on a power adder ever? nitrous, etc? Judging by your heads and desired cam, im guessing this is a car that will see street duty? Just keep in mind, when selecting a cam, the lopey sound is cool, yes, but the more lopey it sounds, the worse its street manners will be. Also, cam choice also effects your stall speed (if its an auto trans) and rear gear ratio. For cam selection, theres a few major things you need to ask yourself: Where do i want the powerband (in RPM's) to be? and What is my budget?

Not to flame you in my earlier post, Stekman. Just some random absurd thoughts going through my head as I was waking up to my Sun morning cup of coffee.
