How do you tell a 305 from 350?

How do you tell a 305 from 350?

Speaking thirdgen engines here, friend of mine doesnt know what he has under the hood, anyway to identify between the two? Thanks.

decode the vin number or get the casting numbers on the back of the engine and decode them on www.mortec.com

decoding the VIN only works if its still the stock engine block. The only way to TRULY tell, short of measuring the bore, is via casting number on the side of the block.

Drivers side of block, top side right in front of bellhousing mounting face, will be cast in: 5.0L or 5.7L in large letters/numbers.

Can be seen with engine in car, may need a flashlight.

it will only have the displacment cast on the block in litres if its a newer sbc, older ones didnt have that type of marking.

If the engine came in the vehicle, a 350 should have an "8" in the eighth digit of the VIN, a 305 should have an "e", "f", or "h", I think.
