Some pos tried stealing my car last night, help!!

Now, I'm pretty sure that this is in the wrong catagory, but there seems to be more wisdom in this river of people. Some piece of **** broke my column and tried to make off with my car. I'm am somehow happy, because something must have spooked him. I reached in, pulled on the lever, and the car started, so either he just realized he can't drive a stick, or my neighbors pulled in. My problem now is, my column is broken, and since it's a 5'spd, nobody has one. The book says that 1989 is the only year to fit...is this because of airbags, or is the actual column not going to fit if I try another year? Is it possible to repair a busted column? The lock cylinder doesn't turn, and of course the pot metal is busted to hell. I have a beautiful baby with a zz4 sitting here WAITING to be stolen until I can replace the column. Is there another trick to easily disable our cars? It's a tbi, should I just pull fuses and hope the bastard doesn't check? I want something James-Bond like to remove his fingers if he comes back. And no, you can't have my address. Thanks for any help!! Atleast he had good taste....

Dude that sucks.....someone tried to steal my IROC last summer. A real dumbass too, he tried to pry my window down by sticking a screwdriver between it and the t-top.
The best thing I can tell you right now to help is try wiring in a kill switch for either your ignition or fuel system or both.
I'm going to do this when I put the new engine into my car.

Yeah, if you want to disable your car so it can't be stolen, there are a few easy things to pull.
#1- disconnect power to your ignition coil.
#2-pull your FP/ECM fuse from underhood
#3-Disconnect an important sensor, like the MAP. Also of merit, take a couple of plug wires off and take them inside with you.

So after the douchebag figures out that the coil isn't hooked up, it still doesn't fire cuz the FP/ECM is disconnected. If he figures that out (not likely if you put it back in the plug unless he knows these cars) and plugs that back in, it will then run like complete *** with the MAP disconnected, probably stalling 4x trying to get out of the driveway, giving you plenty of time to stab him in the face. For extra arning, you can undo the 2 bolts holding the intermediate pipe to the cat, so when it fires, you get a nice loud alarm signal.

Same thing happened to me. The best method of prevention that I found was a Column Guard at Pep Boys. It's a nice, thick, RED, locking collar that goes around your column, $50. It might even cover enough area to keep anyone from pulling the lever back or jamming a screwdriver up there to pull it back. I drove my car around like that for quite a while. (Flathead screwdriver=key)

Good luck

You could go under the car and disconnect the power to the fuel pump. It's just a little plastic connector that easily unplugs. I bet it would take him a while to find that:-) ~Arnold

I like it ed, I like it )

I just unplug the Hot to the Coil when I dont want anyone messing with my Car, 99% of the ppl out there would never figure it out.

Or just remove the battery...

But who would wanna steal a 16 year old bottom Of the line Camaro anyhow ?

Firstly, thanks for the support and sympathy. Ed, I especially like the "stabbing in the face" comment. You've somehow figured out exactly how I felt when I walked out and saw this mess. The bastard made off with my Pioneer too. Another suggestion I've picked up was to just take the car to the dealer ( I know, I know) and have them take a look at it. They said they can just order the busted up parts and replace them. This is an option, considering I can't find a column. What is stopping me from using the column from an automatic?

thanks again

Removing plug wires is rather useless. If the theif is prepared he will just pop your hood and replace it. Remember, they are always one step ahead of us.

You can rig a switch to the fuel pump to turn it on/off. Let's see, various kill switches hidden inside the car.

I use an Autolock. You can't pick it because it's a barrel lock. It locks your brake or clutch pedal. Solid steel. Just for arguments sake, even if the clutch rubber pedal or brake pedal is removed..the autolock cannot come off! You can't even fit a tool down there to attempt to remove or damage autolock. Some people on this board say it has welds, so you can break it at the weld. BS. I'd like to see someone be able to break a weld with the small amount of room available by the pedals. You need A LOT of leverage if it is even possible by the scronny little punks who steal cars (mostly kids anyway). I use it on my 5 speed, my car won't even start with the clutch not depressed. it's like $59.95. www.unbrakeable.com I know it's not a gurantee your car won't be stolen, but it will definitely decrease the chances. (and no i do not work for the company)

Another nice invention you can find used. The auto taser. Arms/disarms like a regular car alarm. If it is triggered it gives off a little warning note. If it is triggered again somebody is getting shocked with 45,000 volts of electricity.
