pulling gas tank from 89 gta

i am pulling my gas tank from 89 gta to change the fuel pump
& upgrade . do i have to drop the rearend ?
or will the tank come out ?
any suggestions , i have never done this before .

You do not have to drop the rear end if you cut the exhaust and pull the muffler out. The only problem I had was getting the tank to sit back up there all the way so the straps would reach. The filler neck hangs up some also. I would suggest going the muffler route if you don't want the project to become overly involved. It would be easier fishing the filler neck out with the rear end lowered though.

Just unbolt the shocks and slowly drop the rear down. Make sure no brake lines get stretched though... I've pulled my gas tank out many times and I'd seriously rather pull my motor than my tank because its that much of a PITA.

Its kinda (by kinda I mean really) tricky getting it out. You need to push/pull/twist it just the right way or it'll never come out or go back in. Also make sure when you remove the straps you dont bend them up ...if you do you'll have a fun time trying to get them back on.

dropping the tank isn't that big a deal to me. it halps a lot to have a helper reach in the fuel door and guid it back in place when you put it back in

took the advice , took about 1-1/2 to 2 hours with a buddy
hardest part was getting the neck out
modified the upper lip inside the gas door by rolling
the lip . thanks

removed the exhaust , it worked out good
cause i will be putting on a new muffler anyway

jack the car up as high as possible , & put it on jackstands
