Will LT1 or L98 cam work in an 84 H.O.?

I'm new and if this question has been posted before please give me link, I looked through search and stuff came up but nothing exact.

I might purchase an 84 HO Trans Am. It needs a new carb (btw who makes a good stock replacement carb & intake manifold that gives nice gains?)

NEway, back to subject. Eventually I'd like to start giving it more power and I was thinking of some nice 1 5/8 long tube headers and a cam. And seeing how cheap LT1 & L98 cams are and the fact that they are from Fbodies, I was wondering if it would be ok to put in a carbed engine? Is there anything that would create a problem? If so, what would be an equivalent cam? I don't want anything outlandish, but something to give a good bump in power.

Also, if the Lt1 or L98 is compatible, what kind of hp/tq gains would they yeild?

Thanks, Kevin

First of all why is this posted in the TBI board if it's a carbed engine?

But an 84 engine would be a flat tappet motor as far as I know. LT1 and L98 cams are roller cams.

An LT1 cam is a roller cam and you do not have a roller block. You can run it but it takes some work to your block. This is carb motor but it is a motor tech ?. I will move it for you.

You will need a flat tappet cam for that engine. There are other aftermarket cams that will work just fine for you.

you dont NEED a flat tappet cam, you can run a retro-roller setup. You do, however, need to use a flat-nosed cam, not the stepped nose like the ones found in later SBC's and LT'1's. Well you dont NEED to do this either, but it makes things a lot easier.

TA5literHO, do you have a link to your car? I just read what was in your avatar and I'd like to see it. Also, I looked at the link, thanks btw, and it listed all these different cams. Which one would be the best for me?

Thanks.

Before i (we) go suggesting cams, we need a little bit more info.
  • What RPM range are you aiming for
  • what trans do you have?
  • If auto trans, what is your stall speed at?
  • how important is idle quality?
  • what is your rear gearing?
  • what cylinder heads are you using?
  • what, if anything, has been done to them? Do you know their flow?
  • Ultimatly, how much do you have to spend on a setup?

Does wherever you are hav emissions? Dont get all focused on Crane cams. Comp makes good cams as well. Some being emissions legal, if indeed that is what you need.

if you didnt buy the car yet and have performance in mind you might wanna look for a car with a 350 already in it, unless this car has a really nice body/interior, then you could always swap later. a 305 isnt the best place to start for a performance buildup.

Stekman, I was just wondering about mild cams just for a bit more power everyday all throughout the rpm bands, again nothing outlandish. The car I'm eyeballing is stock with the 305 HO and slushbox.

And I'm not getting a car like this to take out LS1's with. That's what the GTP is for. If I had the money. I'd buy an 89 Black GTA with the 5spd/5.0 or 350. So for $500 and a couple grand over the next couple years could make a real nice car to have fun and play with on the weekends.

Thanks guys.

It all depends on what emmision requirments are for intake and carb. A good street friendly cam that makes good power in a small cube engine is a Melling MTC-1. Its a great 50 state legal cam that will drop right in your engine with no problems and make power in a real world application (idle-5k). If the carb it shot just replace it with another CC-Qjet. You can usually get them cheap at junk yards but rebuilt from a parts store they cost a mint. Intake, id suggest a Weiand Action+. I have real world proof of a 500 rpm gain just by installing this intake over a performer which gave no gains over a stock peice.

You definitely do need to consider exactly how you plan to use the car as Stekman says. There are many brands of cams that are great. I just like crane and thats what I am familiar with which is why I posted that link.

You can make the 305 perform good enough and still have a nice daily driver.
