Car: 91RS_92Z28
Engine: 5.0_5.7
Transmission: WCT5_WCT5
Axle/Gears: 3.08_3.42
Emissions: Dyno Graph pic, need help

My LO3 stock 5 speed failed the IL Air Team emissions test.

CO= 0.84 gpm
NO = 7.2 gpm
CO2= 479.4 gpm
NOx= 2.50 gpm

From the Graph (2nd post) it seems as if my HCs and Cos are spikeing when the shifts are made, not really apparent on graph.
What are the problem areas i should look at?

BTW: 1/2 tank of 87 Octance with 3 bottles of HEET when tested

Parts replaced before test:
Delco plugs
Coolant flush, radiator hoses
185 Thermostat
Oil Change
Bosch O2 sensor

Parts changed 8K ago:
Cap and rotor
MSD Wires
Cat and back exhaust (catco/dynomax)
Engine is stock.

I can push the diaphram on the egr freely.
Car feels strong runs smooth, a little rich.
Sometimes it surges a little at idle, but rarely.
Slight puff of smoke on start (been that way for 100K)
No idea as to the timing yet....
No trouble codes stored
Runs fast sometimes, others slow regardless of temps or other variables

The massive spikes are in 1st gear from a dead stop. Indicator of something?

One thing i cant really understand is how they test a stickshift car. You were really close to passing. I wonder if a different driver could have made it pass.

The spikes on acceleration and decelleration are normal. Your cat is an aftermarket performance cat right? That could put your car over the borderline. One quick thing to try would be too create a small vacuum leak. That might help drop the hc's a little. Another thing to do is to make sure your car is good and hot when you get there.

-Dankhound-

The car warm enough.
That particular driver was excellent. He did not stall my car once and adapted to my T5's weary condition. He deserves a raise. THe test after that one failed with 5x the emmisions. The KID stalled my car 6 times, twice during the test. Really ground my syncros every shift. Good thing for him there are video cameras everywhere in there, that and I dabble in pacifism now and again

My car was overheated really bad once a year ago. Could that have killed my catco cat?

Where do I create a vaccum leak?
And how would that effect HCs?

btw Thanks DANKHOUND for your imput. Nuff' Respect.

Overheating a car once or twice wont hurt your cat. To create a vaccuum leak you have to pull a vacuum line that comes off the throttle body.

Creating a vaccuum leak will make your car run leaner and will reduce you hc's. The only thing that will hurt is your nox but they dont test for that here so it wont really matter.

Any sugestions as to which vaccum line to pull?
I am thinking the cruise control line would be one idea.
Any other ways to lean the mixture out for the test?

update:
Pulled cap and found the rotor to be blacked at the top and worn. Cleaned cap points and replaced rotor with a cheap Wells autozone one.
Pulled the pcv hose to the TBI and sprayed STP carb cleaner, in spurts. Black smoke came out of the tail pipes, (good sign i take it, that the at least some of carbon buildup in my TBI was blown out). Engine sputtered a lot during process. Started the car up and it ran so smooth.
Took it out for test drive and the plastic end tank (drivers side of course) started leaking at the top.
Now I am at the mercy of a local shop recieving a smog check ($35 for what, I don't know), fuel filter (I can't get it off), timing check and an autozone radiator. I really don't like other people working or driving my car. But due to draconian state regulations I had no choice, that and no one here seems to be able to, or care, to help explain why my emmissions are spikeing while starting the car in first on the dyno.

Passed by a c hair w/o any tricks.
Thanks mostly to my new autozone radiator (runs 30 deg hotter). Passing by .003 is not good enough for me.
I want zero emissions. We all should.
License saved. Now I can continue to contribute to society by getting to work. Suspend the plates, not the license. unjust law.

Tip: Have the manager drive your car if there are a bunch of kids there who are more interested in your stereo than properly preforming the test and treating your vehicle with respect.

Hehe zero emmisions thats a good one. Were a couple hunderd years away from that. Even electric cars arent zero emmisions.

The spike on acceleration and decell are normal. When the gas is pressed fuel is added along with the extra air. In our cars the enrichment is slightly more than needed thus the spike in co's. The same is true for decell. When the throttle blades close there is significantly less air in the intake but it takes a fration of a sec for the cpu to realize it and the injector shuts off late causing a rich mixture and increased co's.
