Since you have an '83, I assume your 350 has a 4bbl.
Get a 305 HO dual snorkel air cleaner, or some other kind of cold air induction. That will help ALOT.
When I took my snorkels off (to help it warm up quicker in the cold) it lost a good amount of hp because of it.

Here is what the 305 HO air cleaner and its ducts (aka - snorkels) looks like.

i have a 14" K&N air filter with a K&N X-Stream lid is this not a good enough setup?? plus i really dont like the look of the dual snorkel and i would think my setup now is better then the dual snorkel, is it??
what if i made my hood functional, meaning there would be two open spots in the hood right over top of the k&n lid to creat ram air, would this make a good diffrence??
so i'm guessing a oil cooler does not help out performance to much??

k&n's flow more air but the dual snorkel will grab air that is much cooler then any open element.. put a k&n in one and you have a decent setup.. i too run a k&n and an extreme lid.. my car is track only but i notice the same thing you are refering to.. with a 5 inch cowl hood... after you get enough underhood heat your basically sucking in hot air..

Any ideas where I can get the ducting and the rectangular inlets for the snorkle setup? I have a 84 H.O. and these parts are long gone, I still have the metal factory air cleaner housing though...
Any help is much appreciated!

Might want to check eBay or maybe Year One or Classic Industries...
