Did you disconnect the "set timing" connector on the firewall ? Did you tighten the distributor clamp ? Expand on this a little bit... what exactly did you do ?

If you unplugged the connector to the ignition module in the distributor that's your problem. Like Blade said, disconnect the ESC bypass (tan wire) behind the passenger side strut tower and try again.

I disconected that wire, tan with black stripe and a black connector, before I set the timing. Do I need to reconect the wire before I shut the car off? Do I need to tighten that bolt before I shut the car off?

Where is this shutting the car off **** coming from? Here's how you set timing. If you follow thios procedure it is not reverting back to where you started.
#1- disconnect the tan/black wire ONLY
#2- startt the car
#3- Check the timing
#4- If it requires adjustment, loosen the distributor bolt and move the distributor until it is where you want it.
#5- tighten the bolt back down
#6-recheck the timing to make sure it didn't move while you tightened the distributor.
#7- turn off the car and reconnect the tan/black wire.

Thats it. When you set the timing you are making a physical adjustment on the distributor that can't be changed unless your distributor has moved (which is why you tighten it.) The only other possiblity is your pick-up coil (or some associated piece like the reluctor, etc.) is going bad which i suppose could let the timing wander around, but this wouldn't be consistent, i.e. it wouldn't always back you down to where you started, your timing would jump around unpredictably.

When setting the timming you are actually setting the "baseline timming". The ESC (Electronic Spark Control) controls the timming after you reconnect the by-pass plug. That is why you see the timing mark in the same position after reconnecting the plug.
Also don't forget to disconnect the battery after reconnecting the plug to reset the trouble code in the computer (a code will appear when running the ESC in by-pass mode).
