Won't rev past 2500rpm
I had this question posted under the transmission message board but everyone was kinda stumped so i'll post it here and maybe someone has an idea. I replaced the fuel pump and had a mechanic (i couldn't figure out the problem so i brought it in) replace the fuel pressure regulator. Now my car runs but it automatically shifts into the next gear every time i rev up to 2500 rpm. The car wont switch gears later than that, but in park and neutral it will rev up all the way. The mechanic actually told me this is normal. I insisted its not so right now its sitting in his shop but i doubt hes gunna find the problem. I got an 89 trans am with the 305 tbi and 700r4. O yea, i also already adjusted the tv cable. Thanks. Any input is welcome.

Odds are there is an internal transmission problem, I'd guess a broken spring on the governor (I don't remember what the 700R4 governor looks like, but I know this is possible with a 2004R) allowing the counterweights to extent too soon.
If it were me, I'd take it to a reputable transmission shop for diagnosis.
Good luck

Mine only tops out at around 4200 rpm....Of course my engine/cam came from a Suburban, so it's probably only setup for pulling more than top-end.
I'd agree with the other guys as to letting a respectable trans shop diag the problem.

Thanks for the replies. I'll let a transmission shop check it out. But do you think that before I do i should change the governor anyway? And i dont think i get downshifts but its kinda hard to tell anyway cuz my car tops out at 2500rpm.

I still think that maybe your TV cable isnot adjusted properly or it is damaged somehow. With the car off, open the throttle lever all the way, is there still slack in the cable at this point? If there is, then you need to readjust it. Sorry if I am beating on a dead horse here, but just wanting to be sure what you have there.

Am i readjusting it the wrong way? First i pushed in the tab on the side of the tv cable and then i slide the housing all the way in until it stops. Then i open up the throttle all the way. Is that it? Am i supposed to pull back on the housing after i openned up the throttle?

OK maybe it is the tv cable...i adjusted it before and now it shifts at 3500 and plus now it revs all the way up when i put it in first manually. Could the tv cable just be so worn out that i need to replace it. Thanks for all your help.
