I've "herd" of people doing this

but, taking a peice of hose maby 2 feet long and putting one end to your ear and probing with the oter end to locate the sound

will it tick in idle or just under a lot of load or compleatly random?
otherwise taking the valve covers off is the only other solution to make shure

What ever it is I'll bet it's something in the valve train

It will mostly do it a idel. Usually not right when I start it up though. I notice it more after it has been running for a while. I have had some people mention that it might be be a relay of some form. Then again, motor has 156k on it. I have a ZZ4 but its not ready to go in.

Any "top secerate formula" you guys would recomend to maybe make her quite down a little? Its not loud just pissing me off. Another thing like I sad, they are random and have no rhyme or reason.

Here's a cool trick. count how many ticks you hear a second. Assuming your idle is around 700, if the tick is in the valve train it will tick about 5 times a second. (camshaft runs 1/2 of engine speed) If this is true, use a broomstick and set one end on the engine mount, the other end on your ear. Check both mounts. If it's the valve train you'll only hear the tick on one side, and you can probably try adjusting the rocker arms at this point.

I don't think that it is the PCV valve but I will check that tonight. It is only 1-2 a second at most. Idel is around 500. Now if it is the mixture control (which I have been having problems with) then I guess that means that a new carb and distro go on hu?

It may be an exhaust leak. I've got one right now that does the same thing. It ticks once or twice a second every once in a while.

if it was exhaust it would make noise all the time, you said it doens't do it till it is warm, so that rules out valve train, without actually hearing it, i have no idea

Some one else mentioned that on another board, that might be the case, once I can get it back under a hoist I will be good. I just wanna get this to sound normal. I have two or three other problem with

1. I only have three out of the four gears (auto)
2. I was told the strut plates are bad, heres the problem I don't know what they are. I have been around cars for some time, I have heard it before but never quite understood what they are.
3.Clicking in the front passanger side in the front hub. If I apply slight breaks it will go away. Breaks are good, I assume that its the wheel bearing.

If you guys have any ideas on any of these that would be great.

If you have tranny problems I would suspect it as the source of the noise. Have you tried sticking your head underneath the door while it's running? If it's louder suspect tranny or exhuast leak.

I've heard AIR pumps make a ticking noise before. I also had what i thought was a valvetrain tick at one time, turned out to be a cracked flexplate, and normally you'll only hear that at idle.

Does it sound like it's coming from underneath the car or from the top?

I FOUND THE TICKING! It was right next to the ERG. It was a wiring harness that had three air tubes going out of it. Not sure what they are for but it looks like it is for the SMOG/AIR stuff. Too bad the belts and half of the hoses are not hooked up. That was actually my problem. One was cracked and leaking. For some odd reason if it had the leak it would tick and when I plugged it, it stopped. Sorry about the non-technical knowing of what it is but I really don't know. Too many things under the hood of the computer carb cars.

The whole thing with the tranny is kinda funny. I was told it had a 700R4, well when I looked its a Turbo 350 or 400 (yes I don't know which) so that just leaves the strut plates.. Thanks much guys for all your help!!

ROTFL, that would explain only 3 gears!

Did they leave the stock Shifter, whoever swapped it in then ?

Its an 82, the stock shifter is still in the car. When we threw it up on the lift my auto teacher told me it looks like a turbo when I asked him. Once I saw it I realized that it was not a 700R4. Would 2,500 RPM sound right at 55 or what rear end would I have then? Its not the 3.08 I assume becuase that seems way low. I could say like a 3.73 might sound right.
