I always use unleaded.... i've used Plus blend like once and didnt notice too much. My brother always put in premium whenever he drove my car and said that it runs better with it.

You only need to run the minimal octane you can without any knock. If you go too high on the octane you can actually lose power. If you have stock heads (9.3:1) with a little base timing added you can get away with 89. 0* base and you can use 87 all day long.

Knock is pre-ignition. That means that combustion is starting before the spark plug sets it off. It is caused by numerous things but the most frequent is improper fuel selection and improper timing. Audible ping will sound like marbles in a can. The sound you hear is the cylinder walls actually vibrating. It is the single worst thing that an engine can withstand. If you have a relatively low compression ratio and mild timing you can get away with low ocatne fuels. Using anything higher will delay ingniton and can reduce power. Octane numbers does not translate to "better" or adding "more power". Now if you have a high octane motor or have a lot of timing too low of an ocatne can cuase knock. The heat generated in the compression stroke will cause the intake charge to pre-ignite before the piston reaches TDC. A higher octane fuel requires much more heat to ingnite and will not do so until it is introduced to the spark.

Use the lowest octane you can, there is potential for more power in the lower octanes. In some instances you may cause carbon build up in your combustion chambers with the higher octane stuff.

Engine Knock

higher octane gas looses power??????? i thought High Octane gas (Super) is much cleaner and better gas for the engine.. I mean thats one of the reasons its more expensive then the other gas i mean they dont charge more for nothing ( Super $2.30 a gallon, Special $2.24 a gallon, REG unleaded $ 2.15 a gallon)

Another one falls for the marketing.....

I'm in the wrong business. No wait, I am in the advertising industry, sort of.

We joke that we charge huge corporations millions of dollars for equipment so that they can charge other huge corporations billions of dollars to attempt to convince our children to buy this or that brand of colored sugar water.

I guess it's all about the same.

You know you're not surprised. Look at all the crap that goes on, from American Idol to the Patriot Act.

The democrats have the best one now, they rip the republicans on gas prices, and rip them on America consuming too much oil/oil products as well. Be a Democrat - Have it both ways!!

Nick, here is a primer.

There are tons of site thathave info. When you have the time go through a search on the board as well as the net.

It can if your motor does not need it. If your octane is too high for your particular timing and compression ratio the air fuel charge will not ingnite when it is supposed to. Higher octane fuels need to be matched to higher than average compression ratios and timing curves. If your fuel is being ignited when it is not suppoosed to you are loosing power.
