Cross fire injection
Cross fire injection
This is a little off subject but i might be buying a 84 vette and it has a 350 cross fire injected motor. is that a good motor anything to look out for?

The engine is just your garden-variety smallblock with hydraulic flat-tappet cam.
The FI system is a total nightmare in my experience. Grumpy (in the TPI section) has gotten great results by upgrading to a '747 TBI computer and bigger injectors.
I played with my '82 CFI setup and had it running very well, still seemed like I was struggling for every HP I could find so I dumped it in favor of TPI.

My 83 L69 Z28, bone stock, would wax a CFI Vette when both cars were new. The CFI Vettes all came with 350s BTW, the CFI F cars all had 305s.
If you're looking for something fast, look elsewhere. If you just want to pick up an old Vette for cheap, it might not be too bad.

yeah i would say that CFI is pretty much a waste of time. there are some guys that can work majic with them but there are so many other induction systems that have the ability to procuce so much power, it seems kind of a waste to spend alot on a CFI unit.
THey're not without possibility for performance. THeir operating principles are basically identical to later TBI injected cars- a speed-density based electronic fuel injection system. They guys in the TBI section of this board could probably help out with the tuning quite a bit.
At the end of the day, it's not really the induction setup that's holding you back but just the usual issues of an emissions era motor:
1. Weak cam
2. Low Compression
3. Choked off exhaust
4. Lousy cylinder heads
Build the engine a little more stout with good compression and cam, then get a custom chip burned to match the fuel and spark curves to the engine's new found breathing capability and it'll probably run like a scalded cat.

One of my best friends has an 84' Vette and I think it's a very nice car. I believe the CFI 350 was rated somewhere around 205 HP?? Anyway, it's a really nice car, the engine runs great and he doesn't have trouble with it. I think the only mods he has is an MSD ignition, flowmaster mufflers, and homemade ram air. The most restrictive part of the engine is the intake, but x-ram and offenhauser have made a solution to that problem.
I think it has a lot of potential.
PS I also love the hardtop! My only complaint about the car is that all of them seem to rattle a lot. Other than that, it's a nice car and a head turner. Drive one and see how you like it!
