Electric Cooling fans

What year did Pontiac start installing electric cooling fans in the birds? Right now I'm running my stock belt driven fan, and would like to convert to electric from the junk yard or Summit. I did try to install a single elect. fan from Parts America once but the car overheated. Any advice would be helpful, a picture of a stock electric fan setup would be excellent .......

Thanks group,
Andrew

I think thirdgens got electric fans in 86. I just converted to an electric fan about a month ago, its an easy swap. I couldn't find the top part of the shroud in a junkyard though, they all had cracks or were warped so I bought a new one.

My 83 has the electric. HO (L69) cars had them from the start.

To make it work right, you'll need a temp switch which will go in the right head between he #6 and #8 spark plugs; a relay with about 20 amp contacts, or even a stock electric fan relay; and some wire. I believe all the TPI and TBI F cars had electric fans, so keep looking until you find one; and get the wires as far back as you can, at least get the plug and a long enough pigtail to crimp more wire onto.

My 86' camaro still has the original v-6 electric fan,and i now have a small block under the hood.It seems to work better in traffic because its running fast all the time, while a clutch fan would be going slower while ideling. You have to remember that GM designed these cars to run hot for emision purposes and its a real challenge to make them run cooler.(especially a firebird-no grill.)I'm real happy when mine stays below 190 on a real hot day.Was your fan a pusher or a puller? If it was a pusher type and you installed it behind the rad,you could have been pushing air away from your rad.Not good for cooling. 1986 Camaro berlinetta SC ,327cid.,350 tpi heads-1.94-1.60,64cc,summit cam, cloyes doubleroller timing set,305H.O. alum.intake,1405 edel.carb,rebuild700r trans,b&m shift kit, mega shifter, grant steering wheel,re-done interior,t-tops,metal louvers, american racing wheels......must haves,sub-frame connectors, those funky white gauge overlays.

Check Camaros too, they have the same fan. Same, car, different wrinkles on the sheet metal, and different stickers. But all the parts that really count are the same.

I just got the dual fans and mounting gear (used in excellent shape)from House of Camaros for $60 plus $19 shipping. Quite a steal I thought.
