cam question
cam question
I have an 89 formula 350 that I bought awhile ago and with it the last owner gave me a new summit slp cam part# slp51010. I think its .502/.510 lift .224/.230 duration. I have after market chevy aluminum heads, headers, AL6 m.s.d. ignition,24lbs injectors, and a 343 rear end. After saying all that my question is has anyone used this cam and is it worth the effort to put it in?
Well, it certianly is a lot hotter than stock. If you are still using the stock TPI intake I think you will be a bet disappointed in the results. The TPI in stock form chokes the life out of the motor, making big cams a real disappointment in many cases. Open up the intake, though, and it's a different story.
I'm far from an expert but I've built and worke on a few TPI cars and the stock intake almost always becomes a restriction to a large cam.

The entire intake base is a restriction. Porting the head gasket side doesn't really help all that much. A couple of people make replacement bases, which is what you'll need to get. Otherwise you could easily end up making the car go slower. That's also enough cam that you'll need some chip work.

i got a question....
if you get the summit catalog, go to page 47 and the one that says "Up to 40 horsepower for your TPI engine" 204/214 dur @ .050 lift and .420/.442 lift. I have a 305 and just want to get a nice 240-250 hp out of it for now. I will be building up a L98 in the next two years.
I was also thinking about the Crane Compucam with 210/216 dur @ .050 lift and .440/.454 lift or 204/214 dur @ .050 lift, .423/.446 lift.
I would be using stock head, hooker headers, 3" cat-back and the little stuff that transfers onto the L98.

Pete, I put a huge cam (LT4 HOT) in my car with the stock TPI and it didn't help my car all that much, but I have stock heads. Before you put that cam in your car, I would recomend getting a high flow intake base and even a set of large tube runners if you have the money. Then you can really appreciate that big cam. BTW, the specs on my cam are 218*/228* duration @ .050 with .498/.498 lift.

What exactly do you want to know?
It's a good cam, you just don't quite have the right motor to put it in. Or, you could alter your motor and then it would be a great cam. If you're asking if you should just slide that thing into your motoras it seems liekly that it now stands, I'd say no. If you have other plans to modify the thing (the intake system) that won't work right with that cam, then it's a different matter. It looks to me like your car is well on its way to being able to use it, but as long as you have a stock TPI on it, the cam will be a disappointment, and might even make the car go slower rather than faster.

O.K. I understand that the stock tpi system is not a very good set up . Can you tell me of an after market replacement that will work with my cam. I would like to get the car to run in the 13's. I understand that i will have to spend some money on other parts to achieve this goal. But how hard can it be to run in the 13's. Thanks everybody for your help.
You should be able to get into the 13s with that cam and your mods. While you have the intake system off you should port the base, runners and plenum to get as much out of the stock system as you can.(That is unless you can afford a new system)
You should be able to find all the info you need about porting in the archives and tech articles at this site.

I'm no expert on the TPI system, but what people seem to have the most success with is the AS&M runners and a replacement base, such as Edelbrock's. Those will work with that cam, should put you pretty deep into the 13s if the car hooks up.
