Hole in gas tank.
Hole in gas tank.
..............got a hole in my tank, drained it, tried to jb weld it, did not work....tried again ...drained it, used acetone to clean it.....jb weld, then liquid steel ontop of that....still leaked.
the hole is roughly the size of .... ---> . <---- that IF even.....damn near microscopic......a rock must have jumped up and hit the tank on the very bottom end nearest the ground. has a dent then the hole.....
So i opted to remove the tank entirely.....perhaps i will weld it myself or use some chewing gum on the inside of the tank and call it a day....... ..... ...... JOKE heh
actually ....im not sure what im going to do, thats why im posting here.....im sure there are people who will weld the tank....they used to weld tanks IN the cars at indy 500 years back....hooked up a holes from one exhaust and stuck the other end of the tube i9n the tank and pumped it full of exhaust fumes and took out the o2 level ...altho....not the best of ideas it worked .......definatly wouldnt do it myself buuuuut.......why do that when theres always some fool willing to do it for money
anyways.....enough of the bs .....it should take a minimul sized amount of whatever epoxy to seal the Small hole but it never does.....the size i have been putting on is about the4 size of a silver dollar. perhaps ill just use the whole tube of epoxy and plaster the entire bottom of the tank haha
what other gas tanks will fit in out cars.......cause new, our tanks start at about 200 dollars. and thats just too much to pay for a hole this size.......maybe if it had a huge gash i could understand...but this has to be repairable....but how? INSITE ...OPINIONS!!!!!!

Welding a gas tank is risky. You better clean that tank real well before you decide to weld it. Even an empty tank with fumes is very dangerous. Never heard the exahust technique but I would be wary.

Actually it's only the fumes in the tank that are 'dangerous'. Hell just fill it with water and tack the hole closed. People have been known to use fiberglass as well. And the exhaust pumping in does work.
What I'd do is drain it, keep the cap off and let it sit in the sun a hot day or so. Then use whichever safety method you prefer.

I was thinking about the water idea myself. The reason I wouldnt do it empty is because I have had my gas tank sitting out empty for close to a year and it still stinks like gas.

When I sumped my gas tank I just emptied it out then filled it up with water ...let it sit outside a few days, drained it out, refilled/emptied it about 5 times in a row, then let it sit another few days. It was about as clean as you could get it. Before my friend welded it he filled it up like 3/4 of the way with water.
If you have a pin hole leak JB Weld should definately fix it... You need to make sure you COMPLETELY empty the tank beforehand though because one drip of gas will screw it up.
I use JB Weld like theres no tomorrow - Its like duct tape only nothing like duct tape :hail:

well when i DID use jb weld....twice....both times it was while the tank was still in the car......but i had that sucker as empty as it could get when i did it.....its real easy to see where gas is leaking out (which you all know) much like using alchohol in the intake ports when lapping valves....EASY to spot leaks......and i had it to a leak free point....cleaned the surface with acetone as well.....still leaked......im wondering if the patch is big enough....then again a small dab should do it...shouldnt take an area the size of a baseball......
what other tanks will work in these cars *91 rs*
i have a 86 berlinetta junk car that i Can pull a tank from for free.....the problem is....theres a F$#%ING hole in it too where some genius before me mounted an amp back there and drilled a screw in that lil half moon cut out in the carpet on the back lid....and you guessed it.....was a 2 inch long screw.....right into the tank
but im figuring patching a hole at the very top of the tank is a lot easier than doing it at the very bottom where you have to deal with the tank possibly flexing a lil when completly filled...plus gravity working against you....

I'd empty out the gas tank again (yeah I know PITA). Then I'd put the car on jackstands so the car leans away from where the leak is. Let it sit for a day with the filler cap off then try to JB Weld it again. Put a nice thick bab on there. This way you can ensure any leftover fuel in the tank is away from the hole so theres no chance of it leaking out and ruining the curing process of JB Weld.
I don't know if you've ever pulled a gas tank before but the first time you try it always proves to be a REAL fun experience [insert sarcasm here]. Its the last thing I'd wanna do on my car.

yeah, see i figured as much......but when i searched for gas tanks (new) it pulled up a list for 82 - 87 then 88-92
THEN pulled up a different tank all together for FI 82-92
but the pics of them all looked identical and not one tank came with a pump......so maybe there is a difference.....
i know not a lot of people out there are swapping gas tanks cause well....wtf is the need lol.....so i guess ill embark upon this adventure into the unknown so that a few of us WILL know for sure if the tanks are interchangable.....
didnt the b4c come with a different tank? 2 gallons larger and baffled? think the z and iroc might have came with the same tanks....
i keep thinking a 4th gen tank will work....i dunno why.....the pic of one looks identical but looks arent everything.
btw..new tank is 260 bucks.

should i tell the funny story? ill tell the funny story.
here is irony for ya.
i had (past tense) never pulled the tank out of our cars....i have literally pulled everything BUT the tank...so my friends 91 rs fuel pump dies....gets qouted 600 bucks for the swap....so im like....man we can replace that no problem, yall help, ill point out what needs to come off...
well....6 hours later and the tank was still not out so i told them to move the hell over....and ripped the tank out myself....
replaced the fuel pump, put everything back together, everything goes well (other than not getting paid cause they *helped*)
anyways....no leaks....good job.....walk behind my car to move it out of the way....theres a damn puddle of gas behind my car....
now wtf.....my car got jealous or something?? said....hey now....you never messed with MY fuel tank....so NOW ya will!!
and....the first time i put the patch on the tank.....all the gas was drained out.....made the mistake of not cleaning the surface real well.....patch fell off....ok...round 2.....empty the tank......cleaned the surface with acetone.....put jb weld on it, let it cure for 30 hours, then put another epoxy ontop of that.....were talking....the size of a silver dollar for something thats a PIN hole.....should have worked ....but didnt...
so i got fed up and pulled the tank out of the car......just to feel like i had accomplished somthing....needed to replace the stock fuel pump sooner or later anyways.....now i have a reason....anyways the tank is off....and i CANT get the epoxy off now....yet it still leaks....wtf.....im about to stick a softball sized slab of epoxy on it and call it a day heh
even more funny story......the fuel pump i replaced on my friends car.....moron thought he had ran out of gas....so what did he do? Fill'er up!!! FULL tank of gas......syphon that sucker out....NOT fun to do.......
so somehow the *broke pump* syphon method got stuck in my head and i spend damn near a whole DAY syphoning my tank out, breaking syphons n what not.....then it dawned on me...DOH.....MY fuel pump works......so i disconnected the line going to the carb.....stuck it in a tank........and wired the pump to run constant ..........now this i slapped myself for, for not thinking about it in the first place....but my mind was stuck on the whole *broke fuel pump* mentality due to my friends damn car .... hah...hah....haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

You need to at least temporarily stop that leak NOW. It's dangerous. Here's how, and NO, I'm not kidding......
Wire brush the area as best you can to clean it up and get all schmutz and old JB Weld outta there.
Then get a pack of chewing gum, take out a stick and chew it until all the sugar is out of it. In one quick motion, take it out of your mouth, put it on the leaky area and push REAL hard on it with your thumb to press it in place. Leak will go bye-bye. At least for a while.
Why it works:
Chewing gum is one of the few substances known to man that EXPANDS as it cools (from your warm mouth to the cold gas tank pinhole leak which you just mushed it into). AND it is insoluble in gasoline (it won't dissolve).
Go ahead and laugh. Then try it. You're guaranteed to bust out in a fit of giggles when it works.

here where i start smackin people around for not listening lol....the tank is off the car....any time i saw where it started leaking again i parked it instantly and drained the tank.......
chewing gum....thats funny as hell.....if only i could get the jb weld off ......id put gum on there then jb weld ontop of the gum
too bad......first time the patch of epoxy fell off....leaked.....second time i put it on....still leaks and the damn patch wont come off.....wtf...

Duct tape. Can't forget the duct tape.
On a side note if memory serves there was a huge discussion on various tanks of the thirdgens last year, or the year prior. Might be a tad long search, but if you combine the b4c AND gas AND tank, it may narrow it for you to find it.

The epoxy trick doesn't work anymore for most people because the gasoline companies are adding a small amount of alcahol to the gas. The only way to fix it is to weld or replace the thing.
