Cam and vacuum question?

If you are running a cam that doesn't produce vacuum, what is in place to assist with steering or brakes?

Thanks,
Jason

If that an aftermarket item or OEM? Do they actually work? How? The little bit I understand is that aggresive cams produce NO vacuum. Is that accurate?

Thanks,
Jason

They produce vacuum, just not 20" like a normal motor, maybe 10" or less. However under load they produce vacuum, the reserve can holds the vacuum created from acceleration for use during braking etc.

Didnt some 4 cylinders like older cavaliers utilize 12v vacuum pumps because the small 4 cyls didnt produce enough vacuum?

What cam are you thinking of that you are concerned about vacuum? Or are you just curious?

Just asking in general. From what I understand any cam that generates such little vacuum spits in the face of the CARB and the EPA, so I couldn't use it on the street.

Too bad though. I also here they scream better than any chick in a Dimension Films movie.

No particular cam in mind

Just general question. I look the cam catalogs, and they refer to minimum vacuum, and I just wondered what happens without the vacuum. Are there cams that have little vacuum that are a wise choice for a car that must pass the sniffer?

No. Some older 4 bangers mostly imports like VW used and still use a electric pump for a smog pump. Actually a very good idea.

If you have a large cam that will not produce vacuum at all there are many different ways to cure that problem. The link RB posted is one, BTW GM uses a hydroboost system on 1 ton+ vans/trucks, a vacuum pump or a can could be used or you could get a manual master. Ive been down around 8in of vacuum on the bird and she still had enough to stop from a roll fairly well (one time).

Also look at what diesel engined vehicles use! No vacuum there ever.
