throttle sticking?

my throttle likes to stick at about 2000 rpms but only when the car is running. it moves freely when the car is off, but when car is running it will get stuck. Any ideas?

Possibly the throttle shaft is worn, and the vacuum from the running engine is binding the plates against the bores. Happens sometines.

does this happen when you hold the car qat a steady cruise at 2000 rpm? it could easily not stick when you are sitting there not running and just pressing the pedal down...then when its held at a stead position ...it sticks.

carb cleaner...clean the hell ouf of it....make sure none of the throttle cable lines are worn or crimping anywhere...also...does the car have cruise control by any chance?

no lines are crimped and i just cleaned it and lubed it. That seemed to help out but it still stuck a little. I put and second throttle return spring on it and now it runs fine. Except i still have a vaccum leak somewhere.

Re: throttle sticking?

I have the same problem and it does seem to be related to my cruise control.
Know something about this? Looks like I could adjust the cable at the cruise control diaphram but I'll wait to hear from you first. Thanks.

Re: throttle sticking?

I had a sticky throttle a few months ago, after I had my sloppy steering column worked on.

I was convinced they did something wrong. In away, they did.

The lower plastic panel under the dash...It wasn't up in place like it should have been, so it was rubbing on the throttle pedal shaft. "Wedging" it into staying open, after my foot came off the gas.

I started wondering about the floor mat, but that wasn't it. I looked under the hood...Nothing to make the throttle stick. I found the loose lower panel while crawling under the dash.

Your symptoms sound real familiar. Wouldn't hurt to check, to see if the lower panel fell down a bit.

Re: throttle sticking?

Your car is a TPI? Sounds like an IAC valve going bad to me.
