Hello all. I recently bought this car and soon after I got it it began to get harder and harder to crank when cold. The problem has gotten progressively worse and now i have to use starting fluid most of the time. Took the car to the shop and was told that it was the cold start injector. The problem is that it is a discontinued item. Gm doesn't have it and apparently no one else does either as i have been looking for one for about three months now. Any ideas? Can I do away with it?

 

The shop is full or crap. Your car will start without a cold start injector, it will just take longer to crank. Sounds like you might have an ignition module going bad. It's job it to pulse all the injectors untill the engine starts then the ECM takes over.

If you'd still like to remove it (do not replace it), have your prom (chip) burned for the '89 code which didn't use a cold start injector.

Cool. So all I need to to is remove the injector, plug the hole, and burn a chip? Any idea where to get a chip burned or a ballpark figure on the price? I am in the atlanta area

 

First, Mr. Millican apparently offered to help with PROM burning. Just read his post.

Second, the cold start injector is controlled by a thermal/time switch installed at the front of the intake. If this switch is not operating correctly, your injector will not operate correctly.

Third, the injector may only require cleaning, not replacement.

Finally, there may be other sources for the cold start valve (injector) than GM.

 

What he said!!!!!!!!!!! If you are not familiar with the location of the switch that Vader is talking about, here is a picture of it. It is the pink colored unit on the left, the unit on the right is the Coolant Temp Sensor (CTS).

 

You don't even need to remove and plug the injector, just disconnect the connector to it.

just to high jack for a minute in the picture there are 2 switches/sensors what is the square one?
