What todo with my new L98?
Alrighty guys, as some of you may know, I picked up a complete L98 yesterday for $100, it has 165k miles on it, computer and most belt driven accessories.
Stats on block,
89 L98
165k Miles
It ran when taken out of an 89 Z.
Block casting # 14093638
Head Casting # 14101083
Ok my question is, I’m right now strapped for cash. What would you guys do to turn this engine into a dependable motor? I really don’t have the needed cash to do a full rebuild. So should I get a tear down done, hot tanked, inspect the crank, and get new rods and pistons, rings, oil pump, water pump, timing set, new cam(duh I want more performance), and should I get the pistons bored to make them smooth again?
Just tell me what you guys would do with this engine. I want to have a cheap dependable motor when done. If I can I’ll keep the crank and turn it into my dream 383 way later. But as of now I want it ready to be installed as soon a physically possible.
I will be buying a junk 700-r4 to rebuild it also, so there is no down time for my car.
My idea is to do a basic rebuild, if the crank is ok, keep it, I think I will replace the rods (is this neccessary?) and pistons and cam and everything else (i.e. rings, plugs and stuff), plus the valve maybe.
Just what should I do?

Don't touch it. Buy some damn books! If there is no ridge, you may be able to get by with a quick re-ring job and new bearings. Too much to get into. Get a book and do the
thing.

Take the heads and oil pan off and bolt a 3x4 piece of plywood on the top and use it for a coffee table. I know the post is old but who cares.
Hi man, I'm new
I got this awesome project, and I got the tip you where "the man" to talk to about an engine swap like this. It's so cool, you see, it's going to be real "hippie" sound in it after. :-)
It's a 350 swap into another thirdgen, only a van, but it's still cool as I live in it now. :-)
everything is over here :https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...05#post2078305
Can you help me out please?
I read about your good sense of business getting those damn seatcovers so cheap. Good thinking! Last week I teared up a car at the wreckers myself, and put all the expensive electronics in a aircleanerbox, and just asked how much is was for the aircleaner.
So i got a new coil, fuel pump, relays, brain generator and everything else. even a distributor. Big aircleanerbox
