BAD pinging under any timing * if vac advance is hooked up
I searched but didnt find anything like what im having.
No matter where the timing is set, if i connect the vaccum advance hose and go for a drive the car pings VERY BAD as soon as im on the gas even slightly.Car stalled twice because of this. I have tried connecting the advance to ported and full on the carb with the same results.
BUT if i unhook the advance hose and go for a drive everything is fine.
I dont have a light, i used someone elses before but it got ran over
Also i tried the vaccum advance test and it holds suction.
Any ideas?

What octane fuel are you useing? What do you have your initial timing set at? What kind of dist. do you have? Are you sure you droped the dist. in at TDC with the rotor pointing to #1? You could even have the wrong heat range spark plugs!

Friend of mine said its probably the gas. I normally get middle grade, this time i got the cheap 87.
timing was set at 14* iirc when the motor was put in, the dist was put in correct. I took my time to make sure everything was right.
Spark plugs are correct.
Dist is a used hei dist, vacc advance. Everything was tested before it went in.
I have put about 600 miles on the motor since it went in and it has been fine up untill like the last two tanks of gas i put in then this problem came up.
Watch it be the gas and ill feel like a jackass for even posting this on here.
Btw now that i think of it, i got gas the last two times from the same place too.
I checked everythign today again. No matter how the timing is set it pings BAD while driving. If i unplug the vac advance it runs fine.
Ill get some gas from a different place and see what happends.

Get a timing light too. Excessive advance will damage your motor.
You want 12 to 14 initial and 32 to 36 total mechanical.
Vacuum advance should add an additional 10 to 20deg at high cruise.

if it persists, it could be that your vacuum thingy on the distributor has gone bad.

Yeah i know i need a lite. I used someone elses before but he broke it since then.
I was told if the vaccum advance goes bad the cannister wount hold suction when you suck on it and hold the hose. Mine does hold suction.

Since you did nothing to the motor before the ping started, I'd say it's the gas too! If you ask yourself, What's the last thing I did before this problem started? you'll usually figure it out!
Don't feel bad about posting this, everyone freaks out the moment something goes wrong, I do! When you get the timing light I would bump it back to about 8-10* untill you get some premo gas in there just to stop the ping from causing engine damage. Once you get a tank or two through it, a good rule of thumb is keep adv. your base timing till it pings and then back it down 2* at a time till it stops. Might want to check your plugs after you get it right again too.
