should i just keep my 350
well i'm having a real hard time finding a 400 at a good price. the cheapest i've seen is $250. to much to pay for just a block and bottom end. i still have my decapated 350 in my car.I could yeank that and build it up. Let know what you guys think. also is this cam too much for a 350, heres the specs. solid lifters .495 lift with 236 duration @.050. alredy have this cam and dont want to part with it

thats a good price for a 400. I cant even touch a 400 crank "used" for under 400$. The 350 should be fine though. I wouldent use the solid lift cam stick your foot in it a few times and have to readjust the valves, too much hassle.
yeah i agree, not a bad price at all for the 400, but if money is a problem you're 350 will work just fine for you.

$250 isn't that bad, that's basically the going rate. Frankly, if $250 is all that's standing betwween you with a dead 350 that needs rebuilt on the one hand, and a dead 400 that needs rebuilt on the other, it seems a complete no-brainer to me.
That 282S is alot of cam. It worked great in my 400 for many years, I will say that, but it was alot of cam. I think you'll find that carb isn't big enough on a more or less dual plane intake like that for the RPM range that thing is going to want to run in.

the 400s ive found are used, and reqire a rebuild. you guys say this is a lot of cam for a 350 and i would agree with that, but i have the cam sitting on my self and plan to use it. i dont plan on taken the 350 past 5500 rpm, unless i can scrore a deal on a ballance.i have a Perf RPM intake and 650 holley DP i plan on using aswell.

That cam will pull WAAAYYYY past 5500 RPM in an otherwise properly set up motor. You really should make a choice: either build a motor that will work in the range the cam is for, or get a different cam. It's not an idle-to-4500 RPM cam that you can just putter around with.

personally i'd say stay with what you have since you know you have a good block. if you stayed with the 350 at that cam size you could really twist it good. just spend the extra cash on a good set of 6 inch rods and keep the compression over 10 and you should be plenty happy with it. let it rev.

I ran that same cam as a hydraulic(282H) in my 83 355 with a 3000 stall and 4.10 gears. It was a good cam. You will need more stall though. It pulled up to 6500 and idled fine. I can't remember what the vacuum was, but I used a 3310 Holley with it, and the power brakes and stuff worked fine. Try to run as much compression as you can and open up the heads if you can. If you can get the 400, then fine, but there is nothing wrong with the 350.

I know a guy with TWO 400 SBC blocks for sale right now for $200 each!! However, it's always cheaper to work with what you got! Keep the 350 block but build a 383 out of it! You won't regret it!!
