Burnout,
GMPP has the following recommendations for break in procedure:
Break In.pdf
I would use a detergent 10W30 mineral oil and an AC filter for the first run. AC filters have more square area of filter media than most other brands, and they are have a higher quality relief and drainback check valve.
Since your '89 should have a roller cam, you won't have any of the lithium-graphite cam break-in lube plastered all over the lobes. This stuff tends to clog a filter quickly. However, there are probably other bits and pieces of dust, dirt, lint, and debris hiding in the case in places you can't see. After the initial run of half an hour or so, spin off the oil filter and install a new one. Add enough oil to top off and run for the first 500 miles on the mineral oil. After that, you should be able to safely change to synthetic if that's what you're planning to use. GM breaks in their new engines for some vehicles with synthetics, but I would suggest that they are using different and controlled coatings on their rings and bearings to aid in faster break in with the synthetics. I would still use the mineral oil for the first 500 miles or so. If you want to wait for the first 5,000, that's O.K. Just make sure you change at 500, then 3,000. After that, you're on your own for regular maintenance.
