Headers and Cam Shaft for LT1.........
Headers and Cam Shaft for LT1.........
I am about to drop in an LT1 in the 89 Roc and I figured while it was out I would do a few modifications. Port the intake and heads and a 52mm TB are on list to do. What size SLP Headers will work for my setup and what Cam would complement my setup? Looking for some power, but this is a daily driver so it can't be going dead a redlights...
<it will have a Borla 3" catback and a high flow cat>
Thanks for any help...

89,
I'm having very good success with the Comp Cams 07-305-8 Xtreme RPM cam in my older LT1. I've done some significant head porting on the bowl, runner, and radius areas to exceed the flow of the LT4 heads, and have advanced the timing on the Optispark by four degrees to compliment the cam. I also have 2.02/1.94 stainless race-flo valves and lightweight retainers over the GM LT4 springs in the iron heads ('B' car engine) and a free-flowing exhaust. If you go this route, I would suggest a torque converter of at least 2,200 RPM stall speed to take full advantage of the torque available at 2,500 RPM up. It has *** -planting torque all the way to around 5,200, where it begins falling off and is time to shift, anyway.
I was tempted to go with the 07-306-8, but wanted a more docile idle since it's in a family car/grocery-getter. I can always go to 1.6:1 rockers on the exhausts and get almost the same specs as the larger cam with what I now have, so I didn't feel that I was sacrificing anything. I still make a clean tailpipe, and highway fuel mileage actually improved a little. I have noticed that the newer cam has somehow caused excessive wear in the rear tires, however. I'm still working on improving that problem. A converter is next in line for me. (Yes, I'll be getting plenty of photos and will probably write another Acrobat.pdf file outlining the procedure.)

HA! HA!, I like the part about the rear tire problem....I suspect after the weak 305 is out of there, I might run into the same problem!!! Let me know if you figure out how to fix it!!!!
On another note, just curious, you said your fuel millage increased abit..what is it now? (As I will be heading back and forth to school, fuel millage will be a factor - that being the reason I am going with a LT1 - power and fuel millage, you can't lose).
You don't happen to know what size SLP Headers to use(I remember seeing it on here one time, but can't find it) and where to get them?
Thanks,
MM

You need the 1 3/4 headers from SLP. That's what I plan on using on my ZZ430 clone.
For the cam, I'll be using the LT4 HOT cam (Already have it in the block, so I have to like it! LOL) I don't know how that thing idles though.
My dilema now is whether to go with a tuned port setup, and if so, do I use a mini-ram or something similar?!?!?!?
I think the rear tire problem is a common one, as I have it even with my wimpy LG4 305! I want a copy of the .pdf file to solve that one Vader!

'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand. (Man, those Fast-Burn heads sitting on it look good!)
Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

Coated is just that a thin ceramic coating. I did it on mine because SLP was running $100 off the headers, and $100 off the cat back when I bout my set, so since I had saved for the full price, I figured I'd just get them coated, make 'em look nicer! Plaus it added a 2nd lifetime warrantee on my headers, 1 from SLP, one from Jet Hot
Man I have that rear tire problem too! Sheesh, whats up w/ that!? The only thing I have found I can do to alleviate the problem for a little while is get the tires rotated! However, this usually costs me $30 because they have to pull the tires from the rims and mov 'em that way, since apparently the rims have to stay in the same position
There has to be a better solution!
