Attn: Vader and ede. Tentioner teardown update>>>

I took my tentioner apart, reversed it, and got it backtogether. My belt routing problems are over

The design of the tentioner seemed to be very much different than you described Vader. There was no locknut, the assembly was held in place by a retaining clip right on the front only, that was only press fit. The assembly only had about a half turn of tention on it was well, with a fairly thick spring. I put it in a vice, and popped off that clip off with a screw driver. It unwound a half turn, maybe 3/4 I'm not sure. The clip can be rotated in 90 degree incrememts as well. I then basically preloaded the spring the other way, and replaced that clip rotated so it retained it in that position, and could be pulled further to supply tention to the belt. The clip went back on with a c clamp and a hammer fairly easily. I drilled a new hole in the bracket for the locating dowel, almost 180 degrees off from the original, and bolted it up.

Here is a pic of the finished product, with a measuring tape laid in place of the belt for a visual. note the tab on the side of the pin, showing how far it can rotate in which direction.

EDIT: By the way, while I have you here, will the water pump stil spin the right way (original serpentine belt pump), or not? I've completely lost track...

It looks like the pump will be turning the correct way. If it is spinning the opposite direction of the crank, then it is correct. It also seems like if it is still running off of the smooth side of the belt, then it will be reversed, and therefore correct.

----So if she weighs the same as a duck, then she is obviously made of wood, and therefore........???

Ok, I'm looking hard at the photograph trying to figure out how much wrap you will end up with around the crank pulley. The stock setup has over 180 degrees of wrap around the crank, ensuring that the belt doesn't slip and all the accessories get enough belt traction. Is your current plan to have the belt run from the bottom of the PS pump pulley down under the crank, then up the left side of the motor to the Alt pulley? If that is what you have in mind, will you have enough contact with the crank pulley to avoid belt slippage?

D..I've had that same thought...and I'm not really sure. If it slips...I'll just have me a custom underdrive belt system

Alth..if it does slip I bet I could rout it a different way...up over the water pump first, then to the alternator...that should work....

Jester,

"Very small rocks?"

Your tensioner looks/sounds a lot different than the one I disassembled. It was from an '88 truck. I'm glad it worked out for you. They aren't that complicated, and even rocket science isn't rocket science any more.

Maybe this wrap would give you the drive you'll need:

Is that gonna be enough for the alternator? Probably will, but if you run it around the alt, then w/p, then crank, then p/s pump, you should get nearly half the diameter of all the pulleys covered. I didn't draw it up like Vader did though, so I'm not sure if there will be any interference. Just another thought to ponder for you!
