Only one v-belt good enough for WP and Crank?

I switched to a vbelt setup on my firebird, with only the water pump(2 groove), Crank (2groove) and alternator, 1 groove, I'm wondering, will only one belt for the crank, water pump, and alternator be good enough?

Has anyone else ran with just one belt between water pump, and crank?

Thanks guys.

That's how cars came from the factory for many many decades. So I'm sure it will be fine.

So, you're not running a power steering pump then?

And yes a single belt is fine.

What I like to do with this type of setup is to run another belt between the crank and water pump. It looks better and gives another layer of protection if the alternator belt is thrown.

In order to get this belt in place loosen the water pump pulley enough to slip the belt on, then tighten the bolts. The belt doesn't need to be real tight, but also shouldn't be too tight.

RBob.

a few years ago, when i had my 82, it had 2 V belts... a crank, alt and waterpump belt, and an crank to PS pump belt.

well one day im driving, and i see the the temp rising FAST. like scary fast. i also notice the voltage is a lil low. i pull over and look underhood. ofcourse, its late dusk and im in the middle of nowhere.

no water pump belt. i still donno what happened. alt was tight, belt wasnt old, and ive never thrown a belt before or since.

in anycase, i took off the power steering belt and found that it ALMOST fit between the waterpump and crank... so i wedged it as close as i could, and cranked the motor over so the belt popped on.

was a pain to drive with no power steering, and with the headlights on killing the battery, i JUST made it back.. but the 2nd belt worked for me.

WHen using the belt on the water pump and the crank pulley, what size belt did you use?

Just go to a parts store and look up old chevy stuff... like early '70s trucks and stuff. They usually had one just for the wp and crank.

That's the only reason I like my V-belt setup; the water pump will always spin. I keep an old alternator belt under my driver's seat in case I ever need it. Power steering I could do without, the a/c's already gone, but I'd have to have an alternator!
