Why is my car making this sound?!?!

I finally got it running after a year now, and it ran good for a couple of days. Now it has this ticking sound, a rather loud one, you can here it when your driving. And it gets faster as the rpms go up. Also, when i rev the motor up, and when im giving it some gas on the road, it makes this weird popping sound also more frequent with the rpms, almost like a backfire but not. Can anyone tell me what is making these sounds???

Sounds a bit like an exhaust rocker might have come off.

Yea, I am gonna take the valve cover off and see whats up...and the rocker could be the thing that is making both of these sounds??

backfires and ticking noises. Have you recently installed a new cam? If so you may be losing it. But there is a definate good chance that it is just a rocker that backed off.

lol

remember the post you made awhile back, pointing out how when you tighten a poly lock the way they say in the instructions, it pulls it up higher.....(more lash)

but if you tighten them, then turn them both, they dont move?

well i did my whole engine your way, but because im a curious guy, i did one the "normal" way. the exhaust valve for #8.. (in retrospect, i should have picked a easier one to get at...)

sure enough, after 700miles, i had to retighten that one.
only that one.

everything else checked out fine... one of the others was slightly looser then what i set it to, but a nudge of the wrench made it perfect... it was bearly off. i could have left it alone.

so as of right now, i have almost 1k on the valve lash set the way you posted... works great.

post just reminded me of it, since the #8 exhaust was ticking and "popping" from the loose rocker.

Well i pulled off both valve covers and sure enough, the number 1 exhaust valve was so loose, i could spin it 360 degrees around, that is crazy!....there were others that were a little loose so i need to get them, my friend is coming over to do it for me. Will this solve my problems? I took off the air cleaner and the big popping sound was coming from inside the carb, down in the engine when i revved it up. I hope its just the rockers and nothing else

Also, what is he talking about poly locks, should i get them? and what makes the rockers get so loose???

if you have stock style stamp steel rockers, no.. you dont need them and you cant use them anyway. they're for roller rockers.

what made it that loose? i can only give you my theory.
it was probly loose and not set right orignally. when you run the engine with them loose, they can spin... so it just vibrated looser and looser.

the ticking is the rocker slamming into the top of the valve....

because the valve isnt opening enough, you build pressure in that cyl that doesnt get released.

the popping you hear in the intake is some of that coming out the intake port when the intake valve opens.
