I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic motor oil 10W30. I would only use recomend using synthetic oil if you have new valve seals. The synthetic oil will drop right down into the chambers if you have bad seals. This will cause you to burn about 2 quarts of oil per 3000 miles. When this oil costs about $4.50 a quart, thats a lot of money you are throwing away.

My L98 takes 5.5 quarts. I know the spec is 5 quarts, but the spec is the same for all V8's with or without the oil cooler. So I guess the oil cooler holds .5 quarts.

You are so right about that. That's exactly what happened to me. Using regular oil now, 20W50, but want to bring viscosity down to 10W30 or so.

Since Pennzoil changed to pure base it is the best conventional oil. As far as the Mobil 1 not smoking as much as conventional oil past the valve seals it shouldn't. I don't remember why. I used to have a 1985 BMW K100RS motorcycle and when I left it one the centerstand it smoked terrible. The dealer said to put Mobil 1 in and it would stop. I did, and it did, he was right. I remember having it explained why it worked but I forgot.

Are you talking about the synthetic Mobil 1? And it costs about $4.50/qt.? I need to replace my valve seals but might try that type of oil instead...

KAM

(by the way, my L98 has lived on Pennzoil all its life without any problems. The intake and valves, etc. were spotless last year when I had the top half opened up. I know - shoulda done the valve seals then...)

I'll third it! I've been using Mobil 1 oil since I had about 70k miles on my IROC, and now I have over 131k miles and it still isn't burning or leaking oil and the oil pressure is 45 cold and 30-35 hot. I'll be pulling out my 305 to swap in a 355 over Memorial Day weekend, and I'll tear apart the 305 to see how clean inside it is.

I'm tossing this in the general tech/engine dept. because this really don't have much to do with TPIs. Plus, you may get more responses.

One of the best? Yes. The best? Probably not, and likewise for Royal Purple.

Synthetic marketing materials typically compare their product to conventional petroleum oil, and thus look pretty good. AMSOIL, however, will give you industry standard test results comparing their products to other synthetics. Does that tell you something?

I've been using AMSOIL since 1983. I have yet to wear out an engine with AMSOIL in it.

5W30 is a fairly safe choice for viscosity year-round. As for 10W40's, they have not been recommended for any application since the mid-80's.
