How is this 305 rebuild kit?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33620
Is this as basic as I think it is, or is there some huff and puff to it?
Thanks,
Jason

Everyones gonna tell you get a 350, but i'll answer your question. Everything looks OK for a budget but check northernautoparts.com much cheaper.
One thing to consider is the add says hyper pistons, but most speedpro cheapo rebuilder kit pistons are shorter and will kill your compression. The rated compression is assuming you have your block zero decked. They never mention this anywhere.
Try phoning northern and get a quote on a kit, with a different piston, a true hyper or forged speedpro would work, make sure to ask about the compression height.

i wouldn't use the bearings if they were free, they're junk. wouldn't use the oil pump if it were free, get a standard volumn m55 pump. gaskets are ok but i'd trash the oil pan and get a one piece, if you can for the 2 piece seal blocks.

My intent was to use this one as a practice for my 400. If I can make it work (realy not pursuing any more than education here) then I can comfortably "go nuts" on the bigger one. But if it is not even worthy of that can Iuse it as a core somewhere? It came with 416 heads, so I guess I would like to try porting them, but if I do that successfully for what would they work?

You can stick ported 416's onto a 350 to flow good and have good compression hehe

They will certainly flow better than factory 400 heads would. Main issue is compression, then the limitations even ported 416's would have on flow compared to available aftermarket heads.

Depends on your goals. 416's with 1.94/1.60 valves, properly ported, with dished pistons, would run very well on a street 383 or 400. Don't figure on 500 HP, that's all.
