ATTN: GMTech - Question about your custom cold air intake

I have seen pics of your custom cold air intake, and I must say it looks great. I have a few questions:

1. Where is it actually drawing cold air in from?

2. I want to do that on my Camaro, but it looks like the vapor canister would be in he way. What did you do about that?

3. What parts did you use? If possible, do you have part numbers?

Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated.

It pulls in air from the fender area and from behind the headlight.

The EVAP canister is gone.

It is 3" exhuast pipe, w/ a bend in it. It has been sanded, primed, painted and clear coated, and a 3" K&N cone filter on the end. Black plastic was used to "wall" off the engine compartmant from that corner to keep the air "fresh" and "cool".

It is mated to the throttle body by an '88 Firebird TPI snorkel turned up-sidedown.

Considering I went from a TB mounted air filter, I gained a track proven consistant two tenths, so I'm pretty happy w/ it. Plus is actually looks good for being "homemade" and was less than $50.

Do you have a part number of the filter you used? Thanks.

As well as the cone filter, do you have a list of all the parts you used? (Elbows, hose clamps, etc.) Thanks again.

I do not have a part # for the filter. I just went to every part store in Savannah untill I found a 3" cone filter. You will probably find it faster at a shop that sells parts for rice.

The othe parts include:

3" exhuast (had it bent at Mieneke)
88 Firebird TPI snorkel (90* elbow turned upsidedown)
One hose clamp (it comes w/ one of them)
Black plastic (to seal off the filter, you will need to get creative)
I also used sand paper, primer, black paint, and clear coat, to make it look pretty.

I have been trying to find a way to do mine like that. Now I know the trick "exhaust pipe" I had been going to hardware stores trying to find something similar. Can you post pics of it so I can take a look? Thanks

Hey GM Tech - couple questions:

Mine's a tpi and I was wondering how you routed the pipe so it does not interfere with the belt(s) or upper rad hose. I could see how to make a "clone" slp kit for mine, but not how to go over to the driver's side. I don't know how the tbi stuff is setup so I might have to go to the pass side anyway.

Also, the reason I think yours is the best cold air is because it's so insulated. You've got exhaust pipe with a very good paint job and a sealed off filter. This suggests to me that the air is staying cool until it hits that elbow then the plenum. I fail to see how most cold air setups are cold at all - doesn't the air just get heated up on the way into the engine the same as it would on a stock setup?

Thanks for advice - oh and you could make a killing marketing those things and undercutting slp!

I routed it over the radiator hose, I just loosened the clamp and twisted it so it would point "down" a little and tightened the clamp. I also put plastic sleeving (looks like a HUGE chineese fingercuff) off of a GMC Jimmy's radiator hose to help "insulate" the intake pipe and help stop abrasions to the hose. You will need to adjust the pipe's height by where you cut the hole in the plastic. I make mine parrallel to the radiator, high enough to clear the hose, but low enough to not interfere with the hood. It take some playing w/ but if you spend the time, will turn out good. Good luck.

I forgot to mention, I also used some extra weatherstipping to seal to the hood once shut. That takes some playing around too.

How is this setup actually drawing in cold air? Is it in some way exposed to the outside air? I noticed yours is on a Firebird. It should work just on a Camaro, right? Thanks.

It pulls in outside air from many locations. For one, it sucks it through the holes in the "non-functional" battery tray, it also pulls air through my radiator support, which pulls air from the front fascia, which is vented to outside air, and it also pulls air from inside the fender, wich is ultimatly vented to outside air. w/ a relocated MAT, my temps are usualy pretty close to outside air. Should be about he same for the Camaro, but since you don't have pop-up headlights, you should get fresh air forced around your headlights (I think).
