Taking motor/trans out of car...question

OK...I have an 84 Z28 HO that has been sitting up for 5 years. This will be my practice vehicle. I'm going to take motor/trans/rear out of car...rebuild motor and hope trans works in a donor car. This will be a first go around for me. What needs to be done to just get them out of car? Can I bring the trans/motor out at same time together? My thinking was just to unbolt the motor mounts, trans mount, and disconnect trans from drive shaft (U-joint?).

I have an engine hoist and a torch...anything else I need?

BTW: If anybody wants parts of this 84 Z ask now...T-tops/dash/Iroc Wheels/ door etc.
Otherwise its going to the junk yard.

and a TORCH???? are you going to CUT the engine out??? hot damn man..

take the motor out by itself, alot easier than both. block the transmission up, do not block in the middle of the tranny oil pan.

there are 6 bellhousing bolts to disconnect, and disconnect the flywheel.

get an engine leveller, you will thank me..

later,
Colin

If you have acces to a lift I would unbolt the cradle, tranny crossmember and rear end. Support all that on jackstand and lift the body. Otherwise remove the tranny first, then lift the engine out.

I would say it is by far easier to pull the motor and the tranny at the same time...ESPECIALLY if you buy/ rent a leveler for your picker. I have done a handful of them and never used a leveler, it would probably take me even less than my usual 1 hour complete if I had used one of those.

I agree. The last thing you want to do if you are pulling the trans too is leave it in the car when you pull the engine. Ive never used a leveler, I just leave some slack in the chain towards the back side of the engine and stick a screwdriver to hold the chain in place. Ive pulled about 20 engines that way so I think it works ok.

Where can I buy/rent a leveler...and how much would it cost?

ALso, how about this option which my dad thought of (in case it is stupid)...We have a backhoe. Thinking of flipping this car on its side, dropping the trans, move it out of the way, pull the car back down, and un bolt the engine and pull it out.

Any problems with that??

Don't do that. More trouble than it's worth. You already have a hoist. Go buy a leveler for about $30, pull the motor and tranny at the same time. It's childs play. The leveler makes it soooooo easy. I could have it out in an hour or so.
