Could This Short Have Caused an Alternator Problem?

My alternator has been squealing for a while now, I have got all new belts and even tried belt dressing, and the alternator is new, it used to squeal whenever I had my lights on, but now it only squeals when I first start it.. I was told by ODB to check for shorts, but I don't know much about working on cars and I haven't had a chance to get anyone to look at it.
This is what I am thinking, a while back I was under my car changing spark plugs and I hit the starter and got a spark, could this have caused a short that affects my alternator.
