Donut Gasket Continually Blows
Ok guys today i went through my 3rd passenger side donut gasket. Teh damn thing keeps melting and they end up blowing to bits.
I was driving and all the sudden "wow pam" and the car is loud again.
Bought the part for $12, made out of ceramic this time.
But why is it doing this guys?
update: No A.I.R system no cat, and the freeest flowing cat back ever designed. So.... iunno. I have no fange gaskets but they are on there tight so i have no clue.
Also, it does seem to come out when i'm on rough roads....

Are you sure your exhaust system need donuts? I know your exhaust is modified. Maybe you really need some flat collector flange gaskets?

Yeah what is this donut gasket you speak of? At what connection is the gasket failing? What part is it, brand?

the edelbrock headers were meant to be exactly like stock excepot for being headers, you can even bolt them to the stock y-pipe if your dumb enough. They are pretty much like stock.
this time i got a nice felpro donut gasket.

if your going to use a gasket at all you should only use a flat gasket not a donut gasket ....

Now i know why edelbrock headers are crap, they do require a donut gasket. The stock connection do not have gaskets, they are metal to metal. So its leaking where the header connects to the y-pipe? What y-pipe are you using?

Hedman LT's give the best ground clearance. Just get a copper or aluminum donut, do not get anything else.

Most likely you don't have your exhaust hung properly, and the flanges aren't pulling up even all the way around when you've gotten them tightened down. One of mine blew out a few times due to this, finally ended up rehanging everything (my catback was kinda jury rigged up initially, resulting in poor fitament at the flanges by the time I got everything all contorted around to fit together at all...) and it's been fine ever since...
I don't know what else would cause it, it's not that complicated a setup.

Hummm... the only donut gasket on my Edelbrock headers is on the drivers side. The other side is where that little exhaust flapper thing still sits and mates up with no gasket.

Must be different part numbers or something, mine (I have a set on both my 87Z and my old 86 IROC) have donut gaskets on each side. Both are the TES systems listed for 86-92 single cat TPI cars, guess some others are different.
Coincidentally it was also the passenger side on mine that kept blowing out. I forgot to mention this was on my 87Z. I made sure everything was correct with the exhaust alignment on the 86 IROC when I put a set on it later and never had a single problem with it's gaskets...

The TPI cars did not get the valve in the passenger pipe, therefore the Edelbrock headers designed for them are similar. They require donut gaskets on both pipes. The carbed cars did get the valve, and thus the Edelbrocks for the carbed cars use that setup, and do not need a donut gasket on the passenger side.
3 things to check for:
1. Do the pipes line up? They cannot be crooked, and they need to be near dead on even. If not, heat them up, cut them up, do what you need to do to get them to mate well
2. Make sure the outlets are clean and in good shape. Even the slightest bit out of round and they will not seal.
3. What hardware are you using? I had the same problem a while ago and it turned out to be the bolts. While to bolts were long enough, the shoulder portion of the bolt was too long and not allowing the flanges to pull together fully. I replaced the bolts with bolts that were fully threaded. When properly installed, only a millimeter or two of the donut gasket should be visible between the pipes. If not, the flanges will need to be tightened.

on my 85 it still has the metal chunk that a flapper could of been in, it is what seals the stock set up. but i would expect thet the header is flanged and not flat like the stock connection.
