Oil pan drain plug help..

Does anybody have a picture of how a gasket around the oil pan drain plug should look like?

Gm dealer sold me a plug with a rubber washer but it won't seal the oil pan hole. It is very loose.

Bolt plugs are the same size??

Thank you..

Never seen a drain plug for a motor with a rubber gasket...90% of the time it's copper, other 10% of the time I've seen another "soft-ish" looking metal (Al, etc) used.

Heck, my 235 has a steel gasket.

Just what the heck did youbuy?

Okay, rethinking it a bit, I have come across a few that had a neopreme washer...thick, hard plastic...but never rubber.

hard plastic or copper are by far the most common. you wouldn't want anything sofr because it's rip as the force was applied and it wasn't able to spin.

What they sold me was like a washer with rubber membrane in the middle but it looks/feels like the plug is too small and won't screw in tight.

Is anybody using a plag like this. (magnetic) I know that dealer sells these too but i don;t know if it will screw in tight..

I've seen those types too, the ring-like portion of the "washer" on the bolt should secure the o-ring.

Have you compared the size and threads to your original plug?

When you say "loose", do you mean it just won't tighten, as in stripped? If so could the threads in the pan be stripped?

Are you just changing to use a magnectic plug, or you had problem with your original one?

I had a problem with the oringinal one. I took it off and then for some unknown reason it would not snug up. So i bought the replacement from the dealer and this one will not snug up as well. Both plugs are identical except the gasket part..The new plug came with a different style..

I have looked at the pan hole to see if the thread there is stripped but it looks OK.

It basically feels like the plug needs to be one size bigger (from 14mm to 15mm), then again it worked perfectly for so many years..

It alsmost seems as if you have damaged the threads in the pan. IIRC, there are "oil pan thread repair kits" available. Might want to look at AutoZone, ect.
