I didn't get any answers in the engine swap section so I'll try here. What oil pan can I use on a 400 block in a 3rd gen. I have a 70's stocker drivers side dipstick pan, but are there specific 400 oil pans where they are clearanced?

I'm sitting here looking at a 400 and I'm thinking the stock pan looks like it will fit.

The stock pan won't fit if it's got the pass. side dip stick.

I got a cheapie unpainted stock type one from Summit. Fit fine on mine. I think the oil pan gasket has to be 400 specific too....something to do with a thicker front seal....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Oh, and no clearancing needed...

Let me add alittle to that, the dipstick won't work if your running the stock exhaust manifolds. You might actually get it to worj though with a little finagiling and bending.

Now the dipstick will definitely work if your running headers.

yup you are right. For the stock 400 oil pan it should fit with no problem

I used this one on my 406. There were no clearance problems even with the 6" rods.

That's the same one that I use. Note that it has no baffling whatsoever except for a little strip around the edge; it positively requires the use of a windage tray. I use the Moroso Teflon coated one.

I also used a windage tray. I used GM Part # 3927136 along with the z-28 oil pump.

Stock pan fit fine on an 87 GTA I dropped a 400 into. The stock 400's driver's dipstick absolutely won't work with stock manifolds (headers are no problem). Possibly Lokar (the custom cable people) could sell you a flexible dispstick to clear the stock manfiolds but anything solid just can't be bent and tweaked enough to make it fit.

Thanks for all the replies, I tried searching but it's hard to filter through all the 400 threads. I thought the pan for the 400 had to be clearanced compared to all the other SBC's pans for the longer stroke. Not worried about dipstick, headers will be used and a lokar dipstick, Lokar makes excellent products BTW.

My 350 has the drivers side dipstick. I used a 2ndgen Camaro pan, and it fits like a glove. Mine came from a '79 Z28 to be specific.

You can use a drives side dipstick with factory manifolds. There is a gap between the manifold and head above the distick hole. You just pinch the tube between them. I did that, and it works great.
