Is this head damaged beyond use?

Long story short, my 383 blew up at the dragstrip a few weeks ago.

The head definetly got dinged up... is it beyond repair? If repairable what can be done other than smooth it out. Would the increased chamber size be enough to screww things up? Both pushrods were bent so maybe the valves bent too... not sure.

Here is the hole

I have seen much worse repaired. Looks mainly like it needs to be polished up and have some new valves installed. What does the valve seat look like? The real question is, what kind of head? That may justify buying a new set entirely, if they are crap. They dont look like crap to me though (well, just the one)!

It should be repairable. They might use a welder to fill in large pits and polish the chamber and replace the seats.

Last time I saw something like that was when my 383 broke a rod at 6000 rpm. I had a healthy set of AFR heads on that motor that were totally destroyed. They were reduced to $12 worth of scrap aluminum.

Did you get a second opinion from another machine shop? I've seen much worse than Lock's repaired.

There was so much damage that I did not even bother to get an opinion. It literally looked like someone took a shotgun to it at close range.

The major damage was caused when the rod broke and sent the piston into the intake valve. The intake valve lodged itself into the piston top and proceeded to beat the snot out of the combustion chamber.

That sucks. I don't how bad they have to be before their scrap, but the particular head I had in mind had chunks of piston and valve embedded in the chamber. I saw it and asked why they even bothered sending it back. (TEA) Apparently all they had to was remove the piston and valve chunks, weld the chamber completlely up, run their CNC program on it and relpace the seats, valves, and guides. His heads were stock when they came in and left as stage 1's
