Time to choose a cam.... ideas?
Well basicly im rebuilding my 305 and i need a new cam.
This is where i need your guy's input. I dont wanna replace my cam with one thats stock or OE. I want something better than stock. I want more power and more performance, and something that sounds better too.
But i still want the car to be able to idle good. It's going to be a daily driver so i need something with realitivly good manners.
am i asking too much? you guys know of anything that would work good for me?

If you don't want to get new springs or machine the heads at all, then get a cam with .460-.470ish lift and duration similar to 208/218 or something around there.

i run the Xtreme Energy Xe256h (110° LSA) in my LG4, paired up with Comp 981-16 valve springs.
Factory valve springs are crap. They belong in the garbage (I think Vader used them on a table saw or something maybe). From factory they have about 85 lbs of pressure on the seat. That is childsplay for anything resembling a performance build. Also, keep in mind, with time, they only get weaker. Hence, it is always a good idea to get new springs with a new cam (springs matched to cam, of course).

okay so i guess i gotta add springs to my shopping list.
Hmmm, well im not sure what im going to do about my heads yet. I havnt been able to touch the springs yet because i dont have the spring compressor tool.
i called up a local shop and asked how much it would cost to rebuild them. he quoted me $400. thats just for disasembling, hot tanking, checking all the valves and guides, and doing the valve seats. if i need any new parts it would of course cost more.... New springs will probably add at least another hundred bucks...
is it worth it to buy a spring compressor tool and attempt to do it myself?
And about the springs, I guess you guys are saying i need to get harder ones? When i buy the cam will it say on the box what kind of springs go best with it, or should i just get something harder than 85 lbs- something more like 90 - 95 lbs?

Its good that you kept those cams. What kind of shape are they in?
My 305 cam has a few little cracks, and some dark burn marks in it. But then again the cars like 20 years old.
i never throw away my old parts. its always good to have extras kicking around. since i have two 305's i have lots of stock parts. I havnt even looked at my other cam yet, but its just as old so im not expecting much.
besides the cam i was also gonna get new, rings,main/rod/cam bearings, gaskets, hydraulic dampners and push rods. I figure thats about $300 to $400, right? so im doing most of the work myself to try and save money.
oh ya, and i live in Victoria.
