weird noise when cold; search didnt help..

Ok, so in this cold Canadian weather, my engine makes a pretty funny noise right after startup. It goes away after a minute or so, which leads me to believe it is not a loose converter bolt, but it sounds like it is coming from about the same spot. It only happens when the engine is cold, and doesnt last too long. And it is consistent with RPMS, I know that already. It also seems to fade in and out. First I thought it was an engine noise, but now I think it could be tranny, as i cant think of any reason the engine would have for making that sound..

Let me see if I can describe the sound.. Well, like I said, it sounds like it's coming from around the converter. Reminds me of the sound my tranny made when the mount went.. Almost like someone was tapping on the bottom of the bellhousing with a metal hammer... Err.. sort of.. Sorry, that's about the best I can describe it.. Any ideas?

I dunno if this is similar, but I get a whining sound....like amouse that is consistent with rpms, but Im thinking my problem is only a lose belt or something, it does go away after a few minutes.

Seems similar but....meh who knows

hmm it could be, but this sounds like it's coming from arount the torque converter area. And yeah a whining sounds like a belt or something to me. Or a squealing? Maybe it's something else.. I dont know..

Hey did you look at that 85?

Man Im almost sure its the same thing as mine, only when its cold and consistent with RPM's and stops after like 2 minutes. But yeah, open your hood and listen near your alternator. I heard alternators make that sound as well

not a very loud one seems the tick lasts a bit longer than the wee wee sound

Well I dont know what else to do. It's usually only on startup, but today it did it right out of the blue (engine was still cold though)

Any more ideas, anyone?

.......Have you ever replaced your fuel pump? Some of the replacement pumps are faulty as were the pumps on the earlier 3rd gens. They make a tapping sound when cold at start up where they make contact with the cam. Thats what it sounds like to me. Mine did the same thing.......Zapr.

Hmm. Did not know that. I will have to pop the hood next time and see, but it still sounds to me like it is coming from the trans.. Well, We'll see when I start it this morning...
