Comp XE262 and Stock vortecs
Jegs claims the stock vortec will take .475 lift. If this is true it should be safe to use vortecs with an XE 262 cam, or am I missing something?

Thoretically youd have enough retainer to seal clearance, but youd still need better springs. Probably also would want to stake the studs at the very least.
Edit: Wasnt thinking, brains on vacation as usual.

From the JEGS website...

The springs still aren't the limiting factor as far as lift is concerned. It is the distance between the bottom of the retainer and the top of the valve seal/guide boss. No spring, no matter what its max lift is, can change that fact as long as the factory installed height and the height of the factory guide boss remain the same.
I agree with the Pro Topline suggestion, if Vortecs are the route you are taking.

Where do you suggest getting them from? Shaver racing heads used to be the place to go. However, it seems like they went out of buisness.

I've been running the XE262 with untouched Vortecs for like 3 years now. No problems so far but it's pushing the lift limit. If/when I ever get some coin to spare to upgrade to 1.6 rockers I'll be swapping on the Crane spring/retainer set that is supposed to allow for more clearance between the retainer/valve guide boss without machining...
Anyway, since you're buying new it makes sense to go ahead and get a set of modified Vortecs, you'll come out ahead in the long run... But to answer your question you should be able to get away with the XE262 on the stockers as I have...
Oh and I believe www.competitionproducts.com has the Pro-Topline Vortecs.

just get the valve guide bosses trimmed, while you have the heads off,you might as well have the spring pockets enlarged to 1.44" for the good springs.it doesn't cost much.
