Got it, book sucked. 1st, it has very little theory. Its more like a receipe than a car book. He lost about 75% of the streetability going from high 11's to very low 11's. The car was actually a descent street rod at high 11's, by low 11's I would actually like to see him drive this car every day and not lose his hair. The car did run fastest without shifting at high RPM but the engine still would be a pig at 2000RPM. He also made a few sacrifices that you may not want to make. Like power steering, gone. Power brakes, gone. Sway bars, gone. All the springs were soggy 6cyl springs making certain the car sat low and handled worse than a Grand Am. Save your money, buy a book that makes you understand why a car is faster. Then use 10 year newer technology to build one that can run 11's and still handle and drive like a new stock Trans Am.

Hey, that sounds like my car. If it was still street legal I wouldn't want to try driving it on the street.

You can look at it 2 ways. Built it to run low 11's cheap but not very street legal or build it to run 11's and be street legal for a lot more money.

You could build a car that runs 8's and be street legal and a daily driver if you have enough money.

No thanks, I just wanted to know more about it and how old it was. Turns out it's probally out of date. I'm using TPI and he was a carb guy. Not the same. Thanks anyway.

Re: Book: How To Run 11 Second E.T.'s

I looked it over. A lot of stuff has changed since it was released probably the notable rise of supercharging, aftermarket ECUs/ECU tuning being more of a known quantity, the price coming down on decent aftermarket 400 CID blocks, connecting rods, valvetrain enhancements (springs and cam lobe profiles) and the availability of over drive transmissions of high quality. For the era this conversation was created in that would have been a wickedly fast car for the street although the stage3/4 stuff I Wouldn't want to do on the street such as run 32 degrees of locked timing on a 400CI engine. I can't imagine that was a fun engine to crank at all. I'd much rather build something supercharged (even blow through) than that setup on a 355 or even a 305. You'd end up with a far more streetable setup honestly.

Something else that I found interesting was they were running 64cc heads with irons and 70cc with the AFRs. Maybe the flow increased the DCR or something? Seemed off to me.

To the MODERATORS.

Greg Marietti was contacted by me and others on the Forum, in 2014 . . . He was fine with the book being scanned & posted.

Read it & weep . . . https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...bird-book.html

Sorry but there is zero objective evidence in that thread that you received permission to post his material. A post saying "I emailed him and he said ok" is not a green light. My kids do that all the time. That thread started in 2008 and ended in 2014 and is just now coming back to light 6 plus years later. I am not trying to be mean, but its not our material to post without him giving us consent. If you did that to any other author, there would be a cease and desist issued in no time.

I just emailed him, asking for permission to allow me, personally ( by name ), to post the book online, anywhere, free of charge. If he grants that permission, I will repost it,

Waiting for his reply.

Shouts to Matt that's a neat piece of history. People don't understand how far we've come in the last 15-20 years.

My car runs low 11's on motor.
I street drive it.
Drove to the last race of the year and ran a 5.72 (in the 1/8th), which is about 8.98-9.03 in the 1/4, with a shot of spray.
It takes the right parts (money) and time!
