IDLE Wont stop surging!?!?

When I am in park the idle with surge from 950-1200 rpms constantly. When I put it in drive and It doesn't seem to do it bad, but when I am trying to stop sometimes it gets hard to stop and then when I finally come to complete stop the rpms are at like 1100 rpms in drive. What could cause this? The car runs fine other this this highly annouying idle hunting problem. Any tips would be making my day!

yeah man, get into the engine bay and listen really good. It might be closer to brake assisotr since its stopping you form being able to apply full break pressure. Watch out man, houldn't be too hard to fixbut they are a pain in the but if you cant find them.

listen really good... yes.. but it doens't have to be any were by the brakes scince vacum is the same all around the intake. but a i know a way to do it but it's not the most safe way.. well most practicull way ethier. you take one of those 20 oz propane bottles like the ones you use for a propane torch and attach a rubber house to the end of it and then use the hose as a wand and you spray the propane around the engine bay and keep it close to the places were you can have a leak. when you hear the rpms rise a bit you found the general location were the leak is

hehe yeah, just amke sure you dont smoke. It'll eventually kill ya just make sure doing this wont.

But alot of times its not that hard to find vacuum leaks. but everytime i've had one, i never ever lost power brakes. that means you have one heck of a leak.

Only other time i've ever heard of that was when a rat was living in my step-dad's 95 formula back in the day, chewed through more then just vacuum wires cause we found him dead near a chewed up wire under the hood, shocked himself to death.

Propane and/or carb cleaner et al has been used to find vacuum leaks for many, many years. Done properly there is no danger. Jeez...

Its not that I am "LOSING BRAKES" its that its harder to stop because the RPM is higher then normal so I have to apply them a little harder. You guys are probably right about a vacuum leak i think its from were the runners connect to the lowwer intake.

Sounds like the booster itself is bad!!!! Loss of brake assist and a vacuum leak. The diaphram is probably leaking in the booster. Cut the engine off and wait a couple of minutes. No press the brake pedal. You should have residual vacuum in the booster and it should still feel like it is boosted. After about 3 more pumps it will get real firm. If it is firm from the begining the diaphram is definately leaking.

My car too feels like it wants to jump out into traffic because the idle goes up. I know my booster is fine. It still feels boosted in the morning when I step on it before starting up.

It isn't the booster for the brake. Use an old fashoned blow torch for plumbing without it being lit. Keep the pressure low without being lit and go around alll areas of your intake/runners ect. The engine will idle higher when you come close to a leak.
