Stupid L98 Questions...

Other than the aluminum heads and power ratings, what are the differences between the Camaro L98 and Corvette L98 (1991)?

I want to put headers on my car, 1991 Z28, but I have the Corvette engine. Should I be shopping for Camaro headers or Corvette headers. I assume it would be Corvette headers, but then is there a clearance issue?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Chris

Not much, but not sure on the cam.

You want headers for the chassis you are building, ie camaro headers. Ignore what car the engine came out of, it'a a gen I chevy 350, not a plastic pig motor.

Yeah I think the heads are aluminum (like you said) and the cam possibly might be different. Other than that I don't think there are any differences.

But if you have a vette L98, chances are the cam is a bit worn anyway, so just replace it. It's a good idea to replace the cam in ANY engine rebuild, imho.

Back on this Question Again

So, I have learned that there are different headers for the Corvette engines...because of aluminum heads and angle plugs...

This guy up here, says I want Camaro headers...

What do I really want? This is the only thing holding me back from buying today.

Engine: 1990 Corvette L98, Aluminum Heads, Angle Plugs
Car: 1988 IROC Z

Am I buying for the engine or the car? And if it is for the car like the above guy said, then why do they make Corvette specific headers?

You want the Fbody headers because they are designed around the Fbody chassis. You do not want the Vette headers. The exhaust port in the AL heads is a different shape than the FE heads but that shouldn't matter with most any 1 5/8" or greater diameter headers.

With the heads I believe the compression ratio is up do to the 58CC Chambers vs the 64 on our cast heads. "I Think"

If it's a '90 model year engine, it will have a roller lifter cam. They don't wear. If you replace it, it should be for the purpose of improved performance, not as a "refresh" item.

A '90 model year Vette engine will have aluminum heads. With 58cc vs. 64cc chambers in the iron heads, the static compression ratio will be higher. This is to make up for the power loss due to greater heat flux through the aluminum heads.

That's not correct. Think on aftermarket heads some. It'll come clear then.

So what exactly is the compression ratio of the Corvette L98? I've heard 9.5:1 but that doesn't sound right with 58cc chambers. Should be more, no?

I've read somewhere between 10.3:1 and 10.5:1. Don't the bottom ends also have different RMS's? I'm going to be putting the vette heads on my next motor for my IROC-Z so I've been reading about it. I've read some headers are more forgiving than others as far as problems with changing plugs. Some people seemed to have good experiences with Edelbrock so thats the route I went. Some people made their own tool to change the plugs with a welder. I also read that the plugs sit a little bit higher than they do on the iron L98 heads, so the y-pipe might sit closer to the floorpan. When I finally do the install I'll be able to verify these things. (new bottom end, alum L98 heads and Edelbrock headers same time)
