Can Running Rich cause my car to be Slow?

I have black powder on my tailpipes and I get horrible gas milage, so I figure I am running rich. Could this cause my car to be slower, I G-Teched it with the windows down and ran 15.75 1/4, I would think my car should at least be in the high 14's. Any ideas as to what I can do.

Two things to check for the rich condition, advance curve in the HEI and the Carb

But mid to high 15's w/2.73's and a 250?? HP motor seems about right to me, anyone else?

But I thought 3rd Gen Camaros with a 350 and I think 220hp were running low 15's right?

I think I am running rich because I have black powder on the tailpipes, poor gas milage and white smoke under WOT.

And a blown head or intake gasket.

Before I get into this, I'm assuming that with the aftermarket carb and the Accel HEI, you're running vacuum advance? and that the ECM is no longer active?

Check the spark plugs too, in order to help confirm the rich condition. If the engine's running rich, the plugs will be black with carbon build-up.

Check the carb to make sure that the choke is fully open when the engine is hot. Then go through the Edelbrock manual that came with the carb; it'll help you go through the diagnosis and adjustment procedures. (ex. set float height, check for excessive fuel pressure). You might also try changing the accelerator pump to it's shortest travel setting (the manual will show how). If everything else checks out, then get an Edelbrock carb jet/rod kit and go from there. Install leaner main metering rods first, that's probably easiest. But don't worry, even jet changes are no big deal on that carb. It's easy to disassemble and everything... just don't lose those *$%#@ little clips that hold the linkages! Spread a towel out around the carb to catch stuff you might drop.

Well, that's about all I can think of right now. Let us know how things are comming. Good luck!

(oh yeah, and if the head gasket were blown, it'd probably be really running like sh*t, so don't sweat that too much. If you're losing coolant and you don't find any external leaks, then yeah it could be the head gasket)
