TFS 23* vs. G2...
TFS 23* vs. G2...
Well, the subject pretty much says it all. I'm in the market for a set of heads and was scared by the $1400 said and done price tag of the AFR 190's. Heres what I think I know about the G2's and 23*'s.
1.) Both have heat crossovers to retain EGR.
2.) G2 87 up can only take .5 lift, 23* can take up to .6
3.) G2's still have steel guides, 23* have bronze
4.) G2's have 67cc chambers, 23* have 64cc
5.) Both have 2.02/1.60 SS valves.
6.) 23* are available w/ CNC chambers.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Anyone have these heads on their daily driver, and if so how are they? Did you have any assembly problems like finding correct length pushrods, or bending pushrods; you know all the horror stories associated with these heads, can anybody dismis them? Thanks in advance all.

JAson, you might want to call TF and verify the guide material onthe G2's. The first generation TF twisted wedge heads had cast guides. From my notes with them, they had changed the G2's to silcon/bronze guides to eliminate the problems encountered on the early heads like I have.

Hey Jason.. I have the 23* heads, they are still sitting on my bedroom floor though.
FYI..Looking at my spec sheet The 23* TFS-30400004 AND TFS-30400005 heads have Sintered metal alloy guides. The 30400005s are for the 87-95 cars with the 1.260 springs. I dont know what the other one is.
Looks like To get the bronze guides you need to order the larger 1.470 springs. Which guide is better for a street car im not sure.
There is nothing to worry about as far as the pushrods go. If you get the heads they will send you a rocker and pushrod data sheet. It tells you what pushrod to use with what rocker to get the ideal geometry. You should always check it to be sure though.
Like kevin said I would call TFS and get there opinion on what would work best for your application as far as the Head, springs, and guides go. They would know better than anyone.
Both style of heads make good power from what ive seen. I hope to have my 406 running soon, I will find out then.
Good luck!

Awesome, thanks for the help guys!
Kevin, what kind of times are you running in your Z? I'm planning on almost the same top end over a 350. You must be using the big SLP cam w/ your 383 huh? My Superram is on its way, and I'm probably starting the build next month.
Mike, did you have to drill steam holes for your 406?

Yeah... I did drill steam holes,I was a little nervous doing it though. The holes on the exhaust side were easy. It was the ones on the intake side that were a little tricky. You have to drill kinda between the chambers. At a 45* angle toward the exhaust side of the head.
